Explorer opens multiple windows when I double click a drive

I have a strange problem that has been occurring since I very first installed Windows 7 x64 fresh. Whenever I click on the primary C drive in Explorer (or any other CD, card reader, or network mapped drive), sometimes 1 new window will open up, sometimes 2 new windows will open up, and sometimes 3 new windows will open up. The new windows usually, but not always, have an address bar. Explorer just seems to randomly open multiple windows at will.

I've been searching and searching online, trying various Tools->Folder Options as well as registry settings, but nothing seems to work. All I've found is a couple other forum posts with the same problem (random amount of multiple windows opening), but no resolutions.

This doesn't happen on any of my other Windows 7 x64 computers. The main difference I can think of is that this is the only machine I have with an SSD, but I can't see how that would effect all drives in Explorer.

Does anyone have any ideas what I can do to fix this? I would like no new windows at all to open up.

Go to Control Panel - Mouse properties. Reduce the Mouse Double Click Speed and check. This could be one of the problem.

OMG, I can't believe after all these months searching and just living with this issue, I finally figured it out on my own right after posting here. It wasn't the mouse settings, but I did discover what it was. Hopefully my resolution can help someone else down the road.

I realized today that when I click Start->Computer, the issue does not happen. It only happens with my special launcher I made, but I use this pretty much exclusively instead of Start->Computer.

One of the first things I do after install is change the shortcut of the folder icon on the taskbar so that when I click it, it starts in Computer instead of Libraries (personal preference). I always do this by searching online for the shortcut target string. Well, I must have found a site with a bad string this one time.

Normally, the shortcut is set to this to make that happen:
C:\Windows\explorer.exe /e,::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}

However, this time I somehow got this as my launcher string:
C:\Windows\explorer.exe /root,::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}

For some reason that screwed up launching of opening drives. With the /e, it now works the same as Start->Computer - and I'm happy again

We in this forum normally assume standard windows installation and try to guess what could be the problem and give out a solution.

If you need a solution for any customization you have done, we should be told what it is. Otherwise whatever solution we give may not be appropriate.

Anyway glad to know you have sorted out the problem...

I agree - up until today I didn't even think I had a customization. My problem was that I had a customization (passed a non-standard option to explorer.exe) when I thought I was just launching it the standard way (/e option which is the same as the default).
