Solved Export all music, album art, dvd's to ext. HD to free up space on my d

I have 225gb of music and dvd's in my music folder. I wish to export it to an ext. HD to free up HD space on my desktop computer. Is this possible?

So, create a folder within the ext. HD then right click on the music folder and copy&paste to the new folder?

That should work. I would copy them in pieces to avoid accidents.

OK, files are transferred to the BU HD. So far so good. Now I'll delete the original files. I'll be back

First I would suggest checking if the backup works before deleting anything.

Success, it's a bit of a process now to play from the ext drive but it can be done. Best of all I now have an extra 250gb of space. The alternative was to clone my 500gb to a 1T drive which I wasn't excited about doing. Thanks for the assistance with this. I get very nervous when deleting anything.

When you deleted the music and DVD files from your computer, your backup drive became no longer a backup. If you value your data (and I strongly suspect you do), then it needs to exist in at least three places—the original, an onsite backup and an offsite backup—to be reasonably safe. While not as good, even two places would beat the holy, hairy heck out of only one place. If that external drive that has your only copy of your data were to die (and all drives will fail sooner or later), you would kiss your data goodbye. I highly recommend you get at least one more drive and keep an extra copy of your data on it.

I do have back ups on other drives and I also have the actual music cd's and dvd's on a shelf. I ripped all the cd's to my desktop as a convenience for me. Now I need the hd space. Its more of a hassle now to play music but worth it.

What program do you use for "The music center", is it Windows Media Center ?

The media programs i've used have playlists, allow configuring where to find media files, etc.

I use the program JRiver music center 19. The reason I use it over windows is it offers many different file types for ripping cd's. I use "flac" which windows does not have.

imho JR is the most "capable" media player i know of, but it does have a user learning curve.

It's that long learning curve that nearly got me banned from their forum when I bought it and couldn't make it work. I posted my current question on their forum this morning and still have no responses. I'm on my own.

It was posted yesterday at 1:26pm by dunkinidaho. Posted in the windows--old versions--media center 19 for windows--about 14 rows down. Jim the administrator posted a curt responce. He's the person who was close to banning me from the forum. It really was my fault for some choice words I had for the group who designed the program, which I found extremely difficult to use. It doesn't matter what his response is to my post now as I have moved the library to an external HD and freed up the space I was hoping to do. I have another issue now which I will post in a new thread.
