Please help me free up space on my C Drive.

I have the Alienware M14XR2 with an i7-3610QM CPU @ 2.30GHz and 12 GB of ram but my C drive is completely filled up. My C Drive has 40.8 gigs of memory total and less than 1 gig is available. I have a solid state drive installed that has more than enough memory for me but it seems like my OS and everything that I have is taking up all the room on my C Drive causing everything to slow down. I'm not tech illiterate but I am not great with computers. With that in mind, what would be the best way to free up space on my C Drive and is there a way to make things download to my D Drive instead of my C Drive. I get messages saying there isn't enough space on my C Drive to install programs which is insanely annoying. I have moved to my D Drive all my music and a few pictures but that didn't free up THAT much space. Help me please...I'm desperate.

You could change the size of your page file. With 12 Gbs of RAM Windows you shouldn't need a page file as large as the Windows default.

To change the page file system go into the Control Panel, then click on System, then on the left click advanced system settings, then on the performance tab click on settings, then under performance options click on advanced, then on virtual memory tab click on change. Under virtual memory uncheck automatically manage paging size on all drives and check custom size instead. Here you can choose what size you desire. I have 8 Gbs of RAM and have initial size and maximum size set to 2 Gbs (2000 Mbs). These settings have not made any difference in how my PC has performed and it saves me 6 Gbs of space. With 12 Gbs, your space saving should be even greater.

Reducing, or totally eliminating your Hibernation file........lowering your pagefile......moving your User Folder to your D drive and going through the list of Programs & Features and uninstalling anything you don't use or need. That should free up some space. Make sure and run Disc Cleanup as recommended above, and just generally take out the trash. You can use a program called Space Sniffer to find out what is eating up your space. When you use this program, you will see large chunks and your first thought will be to find it and get rid of it, but don't......it is showing you Operating System files and all.

Use this link and click on "Download Here" at the bottom of the page, then you can click on and download the newest version, 1.1.4.0. The rest is fairly straighforward. Space Sniffer

Just to help you out, remember that RAM and hard drive are not the same thing. When we see "mamory", we think RAM and you're talking (mostly) about the hard drive. Always check the C:\Windows\Temp folder, there are almost always a bunch of files there... They are safe to delete. Disabling hibernation will help the most. Good luck!
