External Speakers not playing except when headphones are "Tested"

I have tried reinstalling various drivers, made sure that things were "selected", read through various forms, and I can't figure this problem out.

My laptop's external speakers will not play - except when I select "test" in the Headphones (RTC) section - then they will play for a second or two. The Headphones (RTC) is displayed even when there are no headphones.

Everything was working a month ago, and now the sound is not working.

External speakers? What type? USB connected or using the Headphone jack on the PC?
If the external speakers are connected to the headphone jack, the Headphones, most likely, need to be set as the default playback device. That is usually automatic when headphones (or external speakers) are connected to the headphone jack but in some cases it needs to be done manually.
