Fallout 3 on Windows 7 w/quad core

FNV has its own issues, but I found something that fixed my problems.

One was the directx performance issue, which has now been fixed via the latest patch.

The other was horrible, brain bleeding stutter/lag when turning with a lot of NPC's in the area, dead or alive.

This thread was most helpful, even though it referred to Fallout 3 and not specifically to FNV:
Fallout 3 still Stuttering - 195.62 - NVIDIA Forums

I did a few more tests, specifically in the player house in Megaton. I get the hang exactly once in that house; after that I can turn around all I want without any hitching.

These are the changes/tweaks I did, only listing the ones I believe to be somewhat relevant:

  • Set "iPresentInterval" to 0 in Fallout.ini (disables v-sync)
  • Set "iNumHWThreads" to 2 in Fallout.ini (fixes crashes with 64bit OS and quadcores)
  • Set AA transparency to multisample, disabled v-sync and set pre-rendered frames to 0 in NVIDIA control panel
  • Set AA to 4x, all options to "Ultra", Water Reflection Quality to "Medium" and disabled Transparency Multisampling in the Fallout Launcher

Gets me extremely smooth 60fps outdoors and 100-150fps indoors; no hitching except the one-time occurence inside the Megaton player house.

(I replied):
Thanks much for those settings. They seem to also fix issues with Fallout New Vegas and stutter while turning. That lag/stutter issue was worst when near NPC's, dead or alive. It was pretty much unplayable and vomit inducing.

Also, here are some other multi-threaded tweaks that seem to improve performance on my GTS 250 w/Quad core AMD (update them in FalloutPrefs.ini):

bUseThreadedBlood=1
bUseThreadedMorpher=1
bUseThreadedTempEffects=1
bUseThreadedParticleSystem=1
bUseThreadedAI=1
iNumHavokThreads=3
bUseMultiThreadedFaceGen=1
bUseMultiThreadedTrees=1

Decided to install fallout 3 on my new machine to give it a good run through. Was having the same crash every 5-10 minute issue, sound would keep going. Had to manually kill task. Edited the .ini as stated in the fix, and it worked. Game version I have is final release, game of the year edition. Before steam got their paws on it. Thanks to whomever put up that fix.

Should work for all

If your having this problem for the game then it should still work as it is not limited to intel only, reason why intel was used here was because of the amount of people that have intel and have this problem was significantly high. Thank you for your support!

Just want to say, that after almost 10 years, this fix STILL WORKS FLAWLESSLY. Cant believe Bethesda couldnt implement this fix themselves, especially with the announcement of Fallout 76. Thanks Again!

I played FO3 using Win XP, Win 7 and Win 10 without any issues. I currently have FO3 installed on one desktop and 2 laptops. I did not really have to do anything special to get FO3 running except for installing Games For Windows Live (GFWL) which is not installing along with Windows 10 because Microsoft abandoned it back around 2013. I also installed FOSE (Fallout Script Extender) which disable the game from checking GFWL.

If anything, you can play FO3 in Windows XP compatibility mode. Fallout 3 officially only supports Windows XP because Windows 7 was not released until 11 months after FO3 was published.

just be aware that FO3 itself is rather buggy. I had similar problems with the game right now as I did back in October 2008 with the game crashing or freezing a lot in full screen mode. Whenever I play FO3 for the 1st time during the day I always launch it in full screen mode. If the game freezes or crashes, then I launch the game in Windowed mode which prevents the game from crashing most of the time.
