Fallout 3 on Windows 7.

Preda , please be careful about discussing piracy. It is not allowed here.

You both have a odd issue, as it does seem to me like the game thinks the disc is a copy, rather than a original.

Just curious, if you copy the entire contents of the disc to a folder on your HD, and try running the setup directly from the HD if that would help?
Not sure it would, just a suggestion.

Beyond that, and what Ive already suggested, Im sadly not sure whats causing this issue.

Perhaps others may be of more help.

I have seen this problem before. It may be a bad disc. You need to contact the vendor for a replacement.

or

You can try copying the entire disc to your hard drive and installing from the hard drive. As long as nothing is copy protected or the disc is completely required for install this should work in 2 ways. 1) If the disc is bad you will not be able to copy the disc to the drive (again IF it is NOT copy protected) and 2) If it DOES install it maybe that copying it to your hard drive the reader was able to get past the bad spot allowing you to install.

do you have daemon tools or alcohol or some virtual cd software installed? Sometimes games get upset with these type of programs installed.

@WindowsStar : I could install the game from the DVD without trouble. after the install has completed I tried running the fallout.exe file as admin and in compatibility mode for winxp and win vista - still the same problem : requested the "correct CD-ROM".
copying the contents of the dvd, should it work, and installing the game on the HDD I think will be ok, but I doubt it won't request the already well-known "correct CD-ROM" :p
@ Pusspa : I have PowerISO installed but I disabled the virtual drive prior to my most recent install. It didn't work.

Cheers for the ideas, guys! :D

Hummm, then I would say bad DVD, if it installs but gives "insert correct CD-Rom" for game play when looking for the DVD, then DVD must have a bad spot on it that needs to be read for game play.

Starting Fallout 3 v1.7 on Windows 7 64 Ultimate

I was having hard times gatting Fallout 3 started on Windows7.
I've installed game from DVD, patched to 1.7 and it just won't start up. First time it started with Launcher getting detected video settings and all. Then just clicking Play or running the game with Fallout3.exe won't get it up. It just loads into black screen with mouse cursor rotating as in "wait state" and after a while just CTD with error "Fallout 3 stopped working".

I was searching for various solutions posted by various "experts" here and there...hopefully will list them all below:
1. Installing Live Update for Games or some such shit (already got it so no banana)
2. Running in various compatibility modes
3. Setting Full control permissions to Everyone on My Games\Fallout3 path
4. renaming folder Fallout3 to Fallout 3 (extreme bullshit if you ask me as Launcher will recreate Fallout3 folder again and use that)
5. killing as much processes before running fallout3.exe which is supposed to have som blacklist of processes that will prevent it to start (no comment)
6. Altering bUseThreadedAI value in fallout3.ini which was supposed to fix CTSs in game but I was not able to get in the menu so...

I found my own solution to successfully run the game which will sound extremely stupid but here goes:

Setting resolution 1680x1050 in launcher as the game won't run in 1440x900 on my system (don't ask me why..the other games run just fine in 1440x900).

EDIT:
Also note that I was able to run the same game on the same hardware in 1440x900 with XP.
So I suggest trying Game settings LOW and different resolutions before assuming that the game won't start without some extra magical fix.

With most games, FO3 included, its best to make a Games folder somewhere to install to. Either on another physical drive, or on the C drive ( for example C:/Games/ as a directory )

Install your Games anywhere except Program Files or Program Files (x86).
Since these are protected folders, some games have issues there.

The running in basic Color thing happens Pre-Patch, or at least did for me.
Have you patched to the latest Patch yet?

This is a legit copy of the game correct?

Also, did you un-install and re-install completely to the new location or just move the folder? You'll need to re-install.

Depending where you got the game from, will determine where you get the patch from.

For example, if you are using the STEAM version, you need to let STEAM patch the game, although it probably already should be.

Direct2Drive versions require a special patch directly from D2D.

I Got the Steam Fo3 Goty for christams- $22.50, a gift to me, ha ha. I already had the collectors ed- I got it for $49.99 a few years ago, but no dlcs.

I played OA yesterday, It ran like a top. I was having some troubles at first, when first installed and playing the game. The game seemed to be running well and at 60fps and would freeze up my system for no reason. I'd have to hit the reset button. I thought it was a driver problem and being a new build and I new to w7. But it was not drivers its a multi core or threading problem.

This is how I fixed it. I found this at the beth site..>

Open up the .ini file located in My Documents>My Games>Fallout 3. *Do not alter the one in the actual game directory in Program files labeled Fallout_Default_ini*.

This file is where the save games etc are at. You might have to turn on show hidden folders or extensions, but it is 1 of the files as soon as you open my games- fallout 3.

Look In the FALLOUT.ini find the line

bUseThreadedAI=0
change the 0 to a 1

then below it add the line

iNumHWThreads=2

I came from xp to w7. My older vid card is working more hard and with a new 1920x1080 monitor, general high settings and 4x aa -10x af. Crank up the fan to about 80% it does ok. My ut3 engine games are harder on it tho, like bioshock and borderlands, 80% fan runs it ok tho. It will be ok until I can get a better card, maybe a nv 470 or 570.

I have many missions and places left to find, and just saved doc li and got my power armor training before starting the oa dlc. Now I am ready to get to the end of the game and start broken steel so I can start to lev up more..

Fo3 is a ok game- well its a good game. It is glitchy, beth is poor with patching and really does not care. Its fps parts are clunky compared to bioshock borderlands and the stalker games, but it is still a cool game. $22.50 It is hard to go wrong or get real mad over buggy junk..

I would post some screens. I am not sure if we can. I make tons of game play videos. My youtube fo3 videos..>

Have fun. See ya..

Ah yes. TY for adding that ezeht.

FO3 wasnt very good at handling multiple threads, and I too have found the iNumHwThreads=2 trick to work quite nicely.

However, This usully is a fix for performance, and shouldn't cause problems starting the game should it?
I wouldn't think so, but I could be wrong.

And yes, you can add screenshots to your posts if you want to:

Press the little paperclip above the Window when making a post..

Thanks wishmaster.

Um I would rather add screens by link from say imageshack into the page. Being I know now that we can add screens, thats cool. I guess this will be my new gaming hang out. Talk about games and performance etc, and post screens or links to my game play videos.

I can not much hang out at sites that do not have a gaming section or not let you post screen shots etc.

I am not sure what to say about the fo3 multi thread thingy. I would guess it might help a start up problem too. You can try it, if it does not work, you can always change it back to standard or defaults.

Have you tried to post at the beth fo3 site yet. Or where did you get the game. If from steam, you can post at its site on the fo3 threads too?

Hmm

I have the steam version. I avoided junk gfwl and have no real probs with the game- other than a naturally glitchy game to start with. Every 1 I know that has steam games that also have live- if trying to use live have only problems, and some never get his game working. I have friends right now with bioshock2 on steam and have never played the game, steam gfwl and 2k all blame each other. My friends spent his money and can not play his game- and all because of suck gfwl junk- You really should avoid it GFWL at all cost..

When I d click the fo3 icon on my dtop- I get a pop up saying and showing a code- says I should copy it and will have to enter it. Well I guess it is for gfwl junk. I press ok- The fo3 main gui pops up- it is different than in game- you can make more adjustments here versus in game. I never touch the live button or press home from ingame. I want nothing to do with live junk.

I pretty much hate anything gfwl or ms for that matter.. I only use ms junk because I am a pc gamer- macs are not gaming pc's, so.. The whole point of gfwl and or ms and now a days most game makers are trying to ruin or end pc gaming. That is why we get so much junk and half assed or buggy, or short finish in 1 eve games, and now cost 60 dollar, and or suck gfwl. They are slowly killing off pc gaming and want to push us all on to xbox or what ever kid/arcade- limited key junk..

When they kill pc gaming, I have no more need for a windows pc or gaming. I will never use a console.. You can read hints of such things all over the net. They would much rather make games for consoles, we the pc gamer suffer and have only poor suck console port games, yet they still want us to spend high dollar for pc gaming and or video cards. If things keep on like they are- I will stop playing pc games on my own and get rid of my windows pc, well pc altogether, if not for gaming I do not need a computer at all, so..

Other than being disabled and poor. I have no new games right now. I refuse to buy anything with gfwl on the box and some companies I will not buy from again- which is most until the games are 20 bucks or less and maybe from steam then. It is not a one game company right now I will pay full price for- period.. I am about sick of it- have been for a long while now, They can all go under for all I care..

See ya..
