Hi,
Has anyone found this behavior too?
After rebooting (this happened a couple of times...with the hdd and today with the ssd so it should not be their fault) the windows or toshiba screen do not appears only a black screen, no disc activity and the fan works like crazy!!! I stop this after 1-2 minutes because nothing happen!
Cheers,
paulo

My laptop is a Toshiba Tecra R840-16J (Win7 Pro 64 bit)

This is a newer system so it seems unlikely it's clogged with dust.
I did once have a desktop system that would do this, I finally traced it to a setting in the bios called 'quiet and cool' disabling the setting stopped it from happening.

If you are confident in your cooling system, and that you'll have no problems overheating you can set your Cooler to "passive" which will keep it from running at max all the time. It will still respond to higher temperatures and rev up, just not as often. You can do so by going Start > type power options > click on change plan settings > change advanced power settings > open the processing power management tab > open the cooling policy > choose passive instead of active.

I had to do this when I got my AMD FX 8150 because the stock cooler it comes with is completely obnoxiously loud.

It appears some hardware has failed, if I understand the system is not booting at all?

Now that you mention it, it does seem like that. The title only mentioning fan speed issues threw me off.

Before the black screen, is there anything that shows up? Something with a toshiba logo?
If the screen is black starting from the moment the power button is pressed, then the laptop is most likely defective or otherwise irreparable.

Hello,

thanks for all the comments!
Yes, there's just a black screen with the fan at max! No disc activity! (but I'm not completelly sure that there's no logo appearing at startup at least for a short period! I think it starts with a black screen but I'm not 100% sure!)
After power it off (pressing the on/off the laptop will shut down) and power it on again, everything is normal again, with a normal boot no less! This only happened a couple of times!

paulo
