I've seen people try to fix this problem on other forums and I'm wondering if it's a Windows 7 thing as most people seem to avoid giving advice on W7 except on here.

Basically 2 out of 3 times the game starts in windowed mode despite all efforts to correct it. I've presently got it starting from a shortcut which specifies maximised in it's properties, the game itself is running at full screen resolutions and the startup file it uses is set to full screen and maximised and I've set it to read only after having the little sucker keep resetting itself (one reason I think it may be a Win7 problem).

Any help would be cool as it's frustrating when you want to play for "a little while" (ie intend say 20 minutes and play for 4 hours) to have to argue to get the darned thing started right.

Oh and if anyone knows why this game may keep crashing to desktop after about 4 hours play time, I'd be really grateful (it's not overheating, running out of memory or having a conflicting program start up as far as I'm aware).

Thanks.

running out of memory

Actually, it is. It's got a memory leak problem, which only seems to affect DX10. Once it reaches a certain usage level, it crashes. Getting 4 hours without a CTD is almost something to be proud of.

Try running in DX9 mode to see if it does the same thing.

Also try hitting alt-enter when it starts in windowed mode to bring it to fullscreen.

Okay dumb question, Alt+Enter? Never used it. I'm presuming that's the full screen shortcut. I would have just used the controls on the window but full screen option is greyed out.

This memory leak, I'm guessing that there's no fix as of yet. I was assuming that I wasn't running out of memory cause I've got like 8Gb but obviously that goes out the window eventually...

Thanks though. I'll try and find some means of tracking the memory usage on the keyboard's screen. At least that way I'd be able to save before it crashes.

Nope. No fix :( In fact FC2 has been unplayable for me in 7 since build 6801, so I gave up on it. In Vista it used to crash about the 1 hour mark. In 7, it was only a few minutes.

You could also try periodically alt-tabbing in and out of the game to 'refresh' the memory.

Failing that, quick save often ;)

That's odd. Your specs are similar to mine.. I would have thought you should be able to run it.

Possibly a separate issue?

The problem in 7 for me was that it simply did not play nice with my Vista sound drivers. In the interim, some beta drivers have been released and I've also upgraded my video cards.

I've just re-installed it and will try it again. So far it's benched well.... but benches and game play are two separate things :)

Update:

This game can go to hell as far as I'm concerned. Not only does it still crash in Seven with a stuck sound loop that requires a system restart, it is now doing the same thing in Vista (it never did before. It used to just silent CTD)

It's a pity, because I was getting mostly solid 60 FPS (v-sync on) at 1920x1200 maximum details with x8AA. I could only dream of that when I had my 4850 :p

It's the only game that consistently does it...

lol, I've already finished the game in Vista, (and have quite a few unfinished ones on the HD) but I wanted to compare the performance between my old cards and my new cards, so it's not a huge deal.

However this particular game is somewhat of a nemesis. It's the only one that always semi-worked in Vista, but has consistently failed to work in 7 since build 6801. It's behavior has got me stumped - so it's become personal :p

I seem to have a thing for buggy games. I'm currently battling with Arma II.... that game makes FC2 look like polished perfection

I'm not looking forward to fighting with GTAIV in the RTM either

Thanks mate.

Just curious though, what's your definition of smooth? My framerate yo-yos badly between 20-30 with lots of dips into the teens regardless of settings.

In fact I hardly notice a performance difference between medium and very-high settings with all sort of combination's in between ;)

As for the campaign bugs and squad-mate AI...

(oh no, 2 is down - oh no, 3 is down -, oh no, 4 is down. Of course they are down... they were just standing there facing the other way during a firefight, even after being told what to do. If you can't find cover, at least go prone FFS! :p)

sorry OP, this is getting a little OT :)

i dont have any issues with FC2 on W7..??, even on DX10 im getting very playable frame rates....

earlier drivers would not let me run DX10 AT ALL, the lag was disgusting, but since the 180.xx drivers all has been well. ;)

& i bought ''Arma 2'' the other day & ive gotta say.....''ITS TERRIBLE!!'' :(

I get great framerates in FC2 - when it plays :p

As for Arma 2, it really needs to be tweaked. I spent a few hours today working on it and have managed to improve my minimum framerate by about 10fps so now it averages between 30-40fps instead of 20-30. I can now call it 'smooth' :)

cheers mate.....;)

after i applied the patch & got the added ''AA'' options i was quite upset to find even on 2xAA the chop was far too bad to play it....

i think its a seriously CPU intensive game, & my little C2D is struggling with it :(

Yeah, even all my 4 cores are getting a workout :(

One setting that really helped was the 3D resolution/fillrate - by dropping from 1920x1200 to 1680x1050 things obviously looked a little fuzzier, but it really ran smoother.

The other big killer is the draw distance.

Yeah, even all my 4 cores are getting a workout :(

One setting that really helped was the 3D resolution/fillrate - by dropping from 1920x1200 to 1680x1050 things obviously looked a little fuzzier, but it really ran smoother.

The other big killer is the draw distance.

i will have a play with the settings later on see if i can squeeze a few more frames out of it :p

sorry OP, this is getting a little OT :)
i run the game at max setting no AA 37fps dipping to around 30 at times so its playable but you do need good gpu-cpu-ram i can"t wait for dx 11 cards roll out lol oh! forgot to say GTA 4 tryed everything couldn"t get the game to run at all oh well... not missing much from peoples reviews game coded bad for the pc anyway.
