Fast Storage HDD

Can anyone recommend a fast HDD for storage ? I don't want to big as probably in a year or two, 1 Gig SSD probably will be cheaper. Unless any 7200 RPM drive will do, if there is none specifically that are fast.

Nothing wrong with the Velociraptors, but for storage, I would get a WD Caviar Black, or one of the new Seagate Barracudas.

Either one of those will work great for a storage drive.

I'm leaning toward the WD Caviar Black, good size etc to replace my aging external.

The Velociraptor is a good choice if you need relatively fast access. (That's needed for random transfer of lots of small files.) It has low rotational latecny because of the 10k RPM. It also has a faster read head positioning mechanism than most drives.

If you want high continuous transfer rates, a 7200 drive with large platters may be better. The Seagate series Kelly referred to uses 1TB platters. I don't own one, but I'd expect it to be a good choice. (A single-platter 1TB drive is impressive, at the moment.)

My own data drive is a 1.5TB WD Caviar Black of the 3Gb SATA type. I like it.

Seagate AND Western Digital aren't as good as they were a few years ago because of the flooding that screwed up all their manufacturing facilities. All HD makers make crappier products now. Seagate makes advances in mechanical storage pretty often that end up being industry standard......I'll keep buying them until I have a reason not to anymore.
