I am afraid I have made a mess of things. All the folders in the Favorites in the Windows Explorer side pane disappeared. I have tried to restore the Downloads folder but that has disappeared. So, I am going to start over. What folders were originally in the Favorites, and how do I restore them?

Thanks

I managed to to 'send' Downloads to C:\Users\Me\Favorites\Downloads. However the folder is not displayed under Favorites in the side pane. I have created a shortcut to open it, but I am puzzled why it does not display.

I am curious what I did in the first place? The only I remember doing is enabling the 'hidden files' radio button under folder options.

If that's all you did, then there may be a issue with your C:\Users\(user-name)\Links folder having the hidden attribute set for it. This is the folder used for Favorites in Windows Explorer navigation pane. If you like, see if using OPTION TWO in the tutorial below to restore it's default location and attributes may be able to help.

OK I looked on my laptop and I deleted the 'Links' folder under Users, which is where the Favorites links were located. I tried to restore it by using 'shell:Links', but that did not work.

Not sure why you did that, but that won't work since you just deleted the folder. :(

Did you already try the tutorial above?

You can use OPTION TWO in the tutorial below to restore the deleted Links folder though.
If the Links folder is empty after being restored, then you can use the tutorial below to help restore the default shortcuts in it.

No, what I was saying was I went to laptop to see if there was any difference with my desktop. What I found was the 'Links' folder under Users/Me/ on my desktop was missing, so I must have inadvertently deleted it or something else happened. I tried to restore it with 'shell:Links', which did not work.

OK, That created the Links in Users/Me/ as before. Links is empty. To restore the defaults.....'Desktop', 'Downloads', and 'Recent Places' to 'Links', I should use

Favorites - Restore Default Favorite Links in Navigation Pane

as you specified in post#6?

PS: During this process the existing path was C:/Users/Me/Downloads/Links which I corrected.
