Solved Feeling Blue

Well it had to happen sometime! I have started getting Blue screens and it does not seem to be specific to any software. I recently upgraded my RAM but other than that, I can't think of any reason for this. I have included my dump file.

I'll address some hardware issues. Did you set the RAM spec per their labels in your BIOS? Those have 1.65V and 10-12-12-31 timings and may be still set on the old specs.

I have the bios set to "Auto" for the RAM settings but I will take a look and let you know if I find anything.

I checked the bios out and it looked like the settings were fine. I also made sure I had the 2 memory modules installed in the preferred slots.

WinDBG blames BitDefender firewall as the faulting driver. I recommend uninstalling all BitDefender products completely, and replacing them with:

MSE

and turning on Windows Firewall if it doesn't turn itself on automatically after uninstalling BitDefender and rebooting

I uninstalled the 2013 version of Bitdefender that I was using and installed the newest version. I will see if that solves the problem and let you know.

So much for that! It blue screened while I was typing this. I am going to check a few other things before I completely remove Bitdefender and will get back to you.

I went on the Bitdefender forums looking for ideas. One was to upgrade my network LAN driver to the latest version, which I did, but I got another blue screen shortly after.

I also realized I was running SuperAntiSpyware Professional at the same time as Bitdefender and that maybe the two of them were not getting along very well. I turned off SuperAntiSpyware's realtime scanning and auto Windows startup early last week and I have not had a problem since. It is too early to call this a victory, but so far so good. I will post again once I have waited longer.

I really don't want to delete my paid version of Bitdefender unless I absolutely have to.

Two real time AV pgms running at the same time can cause issues on a machine. Even having both installed might present some unforseen issue - but running two is definitely asking for performance issues in the least.

You've resolved the SAS / Bitdefender conflict by disabling SAS realtime protection. Are there any other AV pgms on your system - some people think "more is better". Run through your Progams and Features list.

you might want to check your statup configurations and trim it down to only the required statups (usually only AV, but some base drivers [touchpad] might need to be there too)

I run my system with bare bones startup all the time and check startup after I install something. Who knows what apps might put in there!

I selectively, over time.. one at a time, whittle down services - (it's more difficult and I break some things... but I know it's broken because I changed a service) . I have no external Bluetooth (BT) devices, so I don't need BT services/hardware. BT might not be a good example becasue it is difficult to get back, at least on my HP it is. But... without any external BT devices to use with Windows, I'm not that concerned. If I ever acquire a BT device and need BT services on my machine, it's my headache

I hope the AV pgm conflict was the cause and your corrective action is the cure.

Well that didn't work either, I went back on the Bitdefender forum and found this for a fix. Before I do this I would like to know what setting ICMPv6 to ALLOW does as far as a security threat. Does anyone know if this is a good idea?

I also just found this bit of information. I just uninstalled the ASUS software which I did have running and will report back. I left the setting in Bitdefender (post above) where it was but might try that next if I get another BSOD.

Think of ICMP as ping. There are other functions, but ping is the best known.

Allowing ICMP might open a small window for threats to test your system for other vulnerabilities. If they can ping your system, they think there might be other ways in... That being said, I used to have a more "open" system and never had an attack.

Well the removal of the ASUS software and the SAS software does not appear to have helped. I am trying one more thing before I change my IPv6 setting and then the next step would be to remove Bitdefender. I will keep you posted.

I just removed Bitdefender. Hopefully my BSOD issue is solved, but I will post an update after a reasonable amount of time has passed. Thanks to all who helped.

Well, not one BSOD since I removed Bitdefender. Too bad, since I really liked the program and have been using it with no issues for several years.
