Solved File associations help!

Right click on one of them, and click on Properties. Next, what does it say for "Type" in the "General" tab? This will help to verify what file types these are happening with.

You might want to try this:

Click Start Menu, and then type regedit in the Start Search and press ENTER. Navigate to the following registry branch:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.lnk

Click on the arrow to expand it and delete the sub-key named UserChoice. Exit from Registry Editor.

Reboot

Very quick solution assuming you have not made or created any documents recently since your friend messed with the computer. This will undo anything since that time he messed with it. If you have copied new music or whatever or added a document this will undo it.

I would recommend backing up your profile, doing the restore on your profile and then copying any files over that are now missing. Quickest way to do this.

Go to rb: click computer-C drive-users-Right click your account name for windows (username) and choose restore previous versions. Or properties-then previous versions. Choose the date before your friend messed with your computer. Click restore. Problem solved.


Also, in the future always make friends or family that want to borrow the computer use the guest account!

After expanding the FileExts I couldn't find the sub-key named user choice.

The lnk download from below would have deleted that same key though, so not sure why it didn't work for you as well.

I think since you are merging the reg data with the above link it doesn't delete other subkeys, it just overwrites if the data is already there and leaves other keys and subkeys alone.

I really don't think it deletes subkeys that aren't implicitly referenced. I could be wrong. I just did an experiment. I found a key in my registry with the userchoice subkey. I then exported it. I removed the line with userchoice in it and resaved it with a different name. It now had no reference to the "userchoice" subkey. I then merged it with the registry. When I went back and looked at the key, the "userchoice" was still there.
