The following happens on my personal Win 7 32bit machine with several folders.

I constantly get a "Denied Access" message when trying to open certain folders in windows explorer. All these folders have a small arrow across the top left corner of their icon. IE I cannot access the Videos folder but if I go via the libraries option then all is ok.

I have tried changing the sharing options several times but it just seems like there is a master control holding things back.

Regards
Lee, Brisbane Australia.

Hi Lee,

How's Brisbane? I'm planning to head over there for Qantm College.

Seems like you have lost ownership magically. Are you able to right click the affected folders and choose 'take ownership'? If you have UAC enabled, disable it (slider all the way to the lowest setting) temporarily to get that Administrator prompt out of the way for a bit. You can re-enable it later.

Regards,

Hello,

Thanks for your speedy reply. Even though I have been to UAC many times in the past I am damed if I can locate it just now.

I have never seen the option "take ownership" ever.

Hi domainbug,

I think it's a likable scenario that some third-party software has gotten a hold of these folders. Can you please tell me which folders they are and where in your hard drive they're located. A screenshot would be helpful also.

Thanks,
Harvey Meale

There are certain folders in win 7 that are just junction points (have no data in them) for legacy apps. they are meant to be locked. what are the names of the folders you are having problems with?

You can find the 'Take ownership' option when you right click on a folder, however it is not visible if your permissions are setup to make your current logged on account a root admin.
In Folder Options (Tools > Folder Options > View in Explorer), is Use Simple File Sharing ticked?

Thanks guys, it looks like I have solved this delema. I had at some stage ticked the option to show all hidden system folders. And these are the same ones that display this black arrow on the icon. I do need to access these folders at odd times using PowerDesk so will need to remember all of this.

Many thanks once again guys.

Lee
