I was in the middle of a large 150gb transfer from one drive to another. as an afterthought, I saw small 50mb file I wanted to transfer from a different drive origin, to the same drive destination as in the bigger transfer. These are all serial ata drives, with latest drivers, though some are connected via usb, some are internal. Anywho.. My second transfer looked like it was going to go across pretty quick, and then it froze all together.. for like 7-8 minutes, during which time, the other big transfer looked to be hung. Frustrated, I tried to cancel the second transfer. It reported it would have that done for me in 5 seconds, but then 3 minutes later, still trying to cancel.

So I started this post, and just seconds ago, it managed to cancel itself. I am wondering if there is a good way to force it to stop, or if there is problem with my system that I can proactively address. I have never been a huge fan of the way Microsoft handles multiple transfers.. or even single transfers for that matter.. What can be done?

ctrl+alt+del opens taskmanager
find the running frozen program
move down click END TASK or Process.

Nice one Tews. I'll be using this from now on. +1 rep.

Yeah.. will give that program a try.. The problem with closing it from task manager, is that it sometimes causes explorer to hang all together, and then you have to close your other transfer as well. Which means, you have to start the whole thing over again. I have not found a good way to append the prior transfer when something like this occurs..

I also have the same problem when copying large size files from internal HD to USB flashdisk or USB portable HD.

The copying process started way too fast (>80MB/s which is impossible because my previous Vista maxed at 25MB/s) in the beginning and then halted in the middle. After waiting for a while, a notification "delayed write failed" popped up and windows explorer can't read (but still detected) that particular drive.

I installed Windows 7 Ultimate x64 BETA months ago and same thing happened, but without "delayed write failed" notification.

My previous Vista SP1 x64 doesn't have this problem.

Now I am using TeraCopy (thanks Tews!) to copy large file, but I am still looking for another solution.

My specs: Acer M5641, Q6600, 4 GB RAM, nForce 630i
A clean install of Windows 7 Professional x64 (not activated) with newest windows 7 nForce chipset drivers from nvidia.

Could the USB suspend mode be engaging even while in use? Might try disabling it is Advanced Plan Settings under Power Options of the Control Panel.

If you have acronis do the following (needs some extra temporary disk space compared to the other methods but its quite fast (unless you are copying zillions of already compressed files such as .rar ones.

1) start acronis and select backup data (rather than backup Computer
2) click the directories / files you want to copy and chose target area to store archive
3) run

4) now run the program again to RESTORE the data
5) click the restore destination - can be different devices etc etc.
6) restore

7) delete the archive xxxx.tib you created in step 2.

No probs and works very quickly using the default options.

Acronis works fine for this type of application (and if you save the archive you've got a backup as well).

Cheers
jimbo

Another solution is "SuperCopier" which is another FREE app very much like TeraCopy. A new 7 compatible version was released about a month ago. I haven't decided which one I like better between this and TeraCopy yet. Both of those apps could use some further development work, imo.

Also, if you have the latest version of Acronis TIH, which is 2010 (forget the build), it gives you a "backup" item on the explorer right click context menu which gives you a shortcut to do what Jimbo45 above suggested. Also, you can set up custom selected folders of your choice to back up that show up in a list you can select from to backup. And there are additional backup configuration options one can set for each folder. It's pretty cool.
