Firefox 5.0 to Launch 16 Weeks after 4.0, Firefox 6.0 Just 6 Weeks aft

I have been using the latest Firefox 6 (code named "Nightly") since it came out several days ago. It is beta software so some problems can be expected. So far it has been relatively problem free but that could change on the next daily update. I don't know much about underlying architecture but I do know it is fast.

I installed it yesterday to see what it was like. It runs nicely, so I've made it my backup browser (was using IE8 for that previously) :

64-bit build has now been updated on Nightly Builds.

I am impressed how stable the 64-bit build is. Its now my preferred browser.:)

I agree !

Haven't had one error or freeze. Use it daily.

Plus 1 on that Manigue. It's running like a dream and I've made it default. I've run Minefield for ages now, as the only x64 browser at the time, and it would occasionally update and render itself unusable.
Hopefully the change of name and icon signals a change in the overall reliability of this build:)

Might give this a try, even though it is still only in Alpha. They sure are working fast though aren't they.

Yeah. I was using Minefield x64 and have been for some time. Initially it seemed to be a separate project to the mainstream builds and it updated nightly.
There would be occasions when an update would be glitchy but it would usually be fixed the next day.
Suddenly it no longer says Minefield at the top but Nightly instead. It's still a x64 browser and uses Adobe "Square" flash
I don't see the problem with these nightly or beta builds. You don't have to do anything. They just update all the time.
I use it as my default browser with Chrome as an alternative. It seems easily as fast as Chrome.
ATM a couple of unimportant (to me) addons are not working with today's build but I can live with that and they'll probably be fixed tomorrow.
That's usually as bad as it gets.
I'm on the nightly testing program and get regular emails and a digest of problems and am also contributing my issues or successes to others.
Today I got a mailing about Aurora builds and I'm not clear about what they are yet. I've got work now but I'll have a check later.
I would recommend the x64 build. It's fast and stable:D

Installing the Nightly Tester Tools 3.1.6 and using the "force addon compatibility" option will make your add-ons work in most cases. Install the Nightly Testers Tools, restart the browser to complete the install, Select Tools > Nightly Testers Tools > Force Addon Compatibility. Just click on "Force Addon Compatibilty", Restart the browser and double check that there is a checkmark to the left of the entry. Your add ons will install but there is no assurance that it will work right.

It's probably just a play on version numbers. Like Google Chrome, they want to increase numbers as fast as possible. I doubt there will be any significant differences between these versions.

yeah, totally agree with the chrome bit. i mean, what are they on now? something crazy like 11... it took Opera many years to choose to be 11 and IE is only on 9 ATM. Google need to have a real think about their version numbering. Anyway, let's hope firefox 5 is an even faster and more solid browser :)

Chrome gets quite a few new features. Chrome 10 brought new JavaScript engine, sandbox for Adobe Flash (which greatly increases security with Flash), GPU accelerated video and bunch of other stuff.

Chrome 9 before it had a few large features added to it as well, such as WebGL which adds 3D graphics capability to Chrome.

I still have to add the app tabs almost every day.
I still have to set Google Toolbar Options almost every day (I know it is not in Firefox, but it is something needed like Flash for me).
With the rates of Firefox going bad at this rate (like their releases), I will have to set the Firefox settings almost every day.
It is so bad for me for thinking to switch to another browser, but I am thinking that (I am a user who has never used IE after IE 5, I tried Opera for a few months, other than that, I have been a Firefox user. Shortly, they are not going good for me).

Downloaded "Nightly" and didn't notice any changes, although the size of the program is 2MB larger than Firefox 4 meaning there must be some change.

It could be larger just by the fact that it is an x64 program though I am not positive about this.

I also downloaded it but I could not get it to run though it did install.

I messed with my AV program including its web shields and Firewall but had no luck. I didn't mess with the Windows Firewall which I won't do.

I have no problems with other programs running.

So I uninstalled it.

I may try it again in a couple of weeks as installing and uninstalling it did not appear to cause any problems with the rest of the stuff on the computer.

Looking forward to use FF Version 5

It will be nice to see a new version as I am not satisfied with version 4 as it does not work properly for me. So I am using their test version calls Nightly, tis seems to be much faster and more stable.

Mainly bug fixes right now, but the first thing I instantly noticed when trying out 'Nightly' a few weeks back was that they'd updated the browser chrome & made it look more smoother compared to Firefox 4.0 which looks jaggy in places & has shadows under the buttons, there's some other minimal UI changes as well in the Add-ons area.

Nope, it's in the Aurora channel, will be released as Stable sometime in June I think.

Nightly (6.0a1) > Aurora (5.0a2) > Beta (?) > Stable (4.0)

jut to point out, 'Nightly' is the build every night, so that people who want to be can be on the 'bleeding edge' of up-to-date-ness with FireFox. Clearly, this does mean some of the nightly builds are unstable.
