As I booted up the other day I got a flash message that Firefox will be discontinued in March, I only ever saw this once when Firefox was booting, it was only on for a couple of seconds or so.

Obviously must be plenty of Win 7 esr user's here, wonder if any have seen this 'splash screen' as Firefox was booting? If FF is going to 'ditch' Win 7 what other broswers could be used as a replacement?

I don't routinely use Firefox, so I wouldn't have seen whatever browser warning you saw. But based on the timing, I'd guess it was probably related to this warning from Mozilla: "Update Firefox to prevent add-ons issues from root certificate expiration"

Note that reference doesn't say you can't use Win7 after March, it merely says you must update your old 115 ESR.

The Firefox project is currently on version 136, but about once a year Mozilla designates a version as "ESR" and commits to an extended period of security updates, if not feature updates. ESR mileposts included 102, 115, 128, and in September 140 will be designated the next ESR version.

Mozilla officially dropped support for Win7 after version 115 so Win7 users can't use any of the subsequent versions, but as long as 115 still remains in the ESR channel Win7 users will still be able to at least get security updates for 115. According to this "Firefox ESR schedule", 115 ESR will continue to receive updates until September 2025, when both 115 ESR and 128 ESR are due to go out of support.

Many thanks for the reply, , the 'flash' I got was nothing like you mentioned. I guess we'll have to wait and see. I thought it strange that I saw it only once as I alway's power off at the end of the day and reading various website's leaves me no wiser, since no one else as mentioned about seeing this flash I guess I might be mistaken..... gotta say though I onely ever saw it once unless it was specifically targetted at me?

Thank you for the response anyway. Dave

as an alternative to firefox ESR since the 115 will stop working, I suggest trying r3dfox, it is based on the latest version of firefox, it works quite well.

According to what I recently read, Firefox ESR 115.27.0 will be the last supported version for Windows 7.

A decision will be made in August whether to end support at version 115.27.0 or continue on with support.
