Firefox username editing

My Firefox browser is unwell. When logging into websites that I have used before, Firefox shows the username. A few days ago I forgot to move to the password field and keyed the password into the username field. This should not be a problem - highlight or right click on the text that is to be deleted, press delete, and it's gone.

For reasons that are unclear this is no longer possible. I do not know if it's due to a FF upgrade, a Win 7 upgrade, or a bug. I cannot find advice on the Mozilla website about how to fix this; all information I found is dated and refers to old versions.

So it may come down to delving deeper into Win 7 to edit or perhaps delete the file that remembers all the usernames. Advice to resolve this issue would be valued. Thanks.

In case it is a hidden file, from the start menu, click control panel, type in folder options, view, and

check show hidden,files,folders and drives. Hope this is of some help. :D

Ethel, thanks. All I can see in ~ Firefox/Profiles is one folder, ff.default. I've selected show hidden, and nothing else comes up, not even in Total commander. Asking via dir *.* /A:H has nothing either. I'm unsure what to do now. Firefox has been quite good until now. I have should old versions going back years on full backups.

Hi again, One more place I just remembered.

In the start menu search box

Type in firefox.exe -P

A box will come up with Profiles, maybe something is there that may help.

This is ~Mozilla\Firefox\profiles.ini

[General]
StartWithLastProfile=1

[Profile0]
Name=default
IsRelative=1
Path=Profiles/ff.default

It was last altered in June 2016. I cannot see what to do here. The folder ~ff.default has about 20 folders and 50 files, some recent. I cannot identify any as being germane to editing the FF settings.

Hi again, Have you tried under the Firefox menu, click options and up the top you see about preferences,

change this to about profiles, and see what is listed there.

There's a file logins.json in your profile that hold all your logins, and I tried opening it with Firefox.exe but it won''t. You can try opening it in Notepad.

I found ~ff.default\logins.json, which says
{"nextId":1,"logins":[],"disabledHosts":["http://www.non-ffwebsitename.com.au"],"version":1}
I cannot see how this relates to a Firefox login

Advice above says to go "Firefox menu, click options and up the top you see about preferences". This brings up a screen called General, with a list at the left General, Search, Content and five others. There is no "about preferences".

I cannot see from the screen shot where Saved logins is located, and it does not come up on a search from the start button or the command line.

It's hard to know what to do next.

Hi Again, If you look to the top of the screen shot that lehnerus2000 has above, you will see the address

bar at the top that has Firefox in orange, and you type about:profiles.

The lehnerus2000 screen shot lacks resolution and I cannot read it. I can type about profiles but do not know where to do so. Three ways of sorting this were suggested:
* ~ff.default\logins.json
* Firefox menu, options, about preferences
* Saved logins
Yesterday I showed that none of these worked, and nothing has changed. Clear advice about how to use the above is sought.

You need to open the Firefox Options.

Type the text in the Code Box in the FF Address Bar
Code:
about:preferences#security

The lehnerus2000 screen shot lacks resolution and I cannot read it. I can type about profiles but do not know where to do so.
Click on the picture to enlarge it.

There used to be an auto-message indicating that. :)

I put about_Preferences#security (had to modify to avoid an emoji) in the address bar and got Security, which has a login screen with nothing listed on that window. A screen shot of this is shown. What I have is automatic filling of the username and keying of the password. I wish to edit the username lists.

The screen shot in the lehnerus 2000 post is low-resolution and enlarging does not make it clearer.

Thank you. I have about:profiles and there are two items, Root directory and Local directory. There are many folders and files. Again I have no idea what to do. It would really, really help if all the steps were set out clearly, comprehensively, and completely.

It's not low resolution.

It's a 1916x969 image (i.e. it's basically a HD image):

  1. Click on the picture
  2. When it loads, click on it again to see it full size
It works correctly for me, I don't know why it doesn't work you. :confused:

To remove entries in a drop down list:

  1. Highlight the item (hover over it with the mouse pointer or use the Up/Down Arrow keys)
  2. Press "Shift + Delete"
FF Delete Entry in Drop Down List.png
Note:
Some sites prevent browsers from storing what has been entered into form fields.

Your screenshot shows no Saved Logins.

Are you saying that when you try to login, Firefox populates the Username and Password fields?
Have you tried deleting your history &/or cookies?

Lehnerus2000, thanks. For some reason the screen shot was coming up low-res. It worked when I followed your advice. The steps do not work because the screen you posted is not the same as mine. I posted what I have and now that has changed to the screen shot below. I have highlighted the username field in the list of usernames, and they cannot be deleted, not by delete or shift-del. the FF is version 56.0 32 bit, which is interesting as my Win 7 is 64 bit.

At the splash screen the username field is blank. If I click on that field there's a list of usernames and I select one. The password was keyed into this field by accident and appears in the list, and I cannot delete anything in the list. I do not know how to delete cookies or history.
