This is a very useful graphic viewing program, no longer in production, but which works fine under Windows 7. The problem is that setting it up requires the program to write some things to the registry, which apparently is being blocked, so I have to go through the settings every time I load it. In Vista I could make the settings permanent by switching User controls off while I set the program up. With W7 I find that even with it set to minimum, Ember can't write the values.

Is there another level of control I haven't found?

Most setting are put in the registry but look for an ,ini file in the directory it's installed in.

No ini file to be found (and I have set hidden system files to show).

With Vista I found that by disabling User Control the program wrote the settings values to somewhere - I assume the registry, but doing the same (I assume) in W7 doesn't allow it to write wherever it writes to.

People of the forum, I have in fact got Firehand Ember Max v7.3.1 to work perfectly in Windows 7 Ultimate x64, with only two steps, one of which, is purely optional.

The program installs normally, but upon first launch, your prompted with an error message that states something to the effect of, Windows cannot read the help files that Firehand uses. Those being, the old x86 .HLP files.

A simple fix is available directly from Microsoft at the following URL:

That is the first of two problems solved.

Next, when you launch the program again, it will seem everything is fine, until you make any changes, or go into Tools, and start to customize the look and feel of Firehand.

It is at this time that Firehand will kick out its second of two error messages, stating once again, something to the effect of, Firehand cannot write to the registry, or Firehand does not understand how to write to the registry to apply the changes you have made.

And our last, and quick fix for the registry problem.

When Firehand installed, it should have created two icons on your desktop. One for the launch of the initial program itself, and the other for the Firehand Slideshow.

Right-Click on the icon that launchs the initial Firehand program, and choose Properties.

In the Firehand Ember Max Properties box, choose the Compatibility tab.

Near the bottom of the Compatibility tab, in the Privilege Level section, put a check mark in the box, where it says, "Run this program as an administrator".

Click Apply.

Your done.

At this point, Firehand Ember Max v7.3.1 works perfect for me under Windows 7 Ultimate x64.

does anyone know where to get a copy of firehand ember? I have been using it and i still have my key, unfortunately when i upgraded my computer i lost the installer. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I used Firehand Ember Max for years under XP but found that it doesn't play well with network drives under Win 7. I found Zoner Photo Studio which seems to be a decent replacement, is still being supported and works great with Win 7, including accessing network drives.
