Long time lurker here...

This isn't a question, but a post that might be useful for other noobs like me. A few years ago I bought a new laptop that came with Windows 7. I had years of experience with XP and on XP I had it setup to go to sleep and only went into hibernate if the battery got to a critical level (that's how it seemed to function though I do not remember the XP settings for that to happen, I think it was the default settings).

So on my new Acer laptop with Windows 7, I had it set to only go into sleep, or so I thought. So it confused the heck out of me to discover that after a few hours, I could hear the computer fire back up as it put itself into hibernate mode. I didn't want it to do that! Why the heck was it doing that?! XP never did that?! In XP, I had come to loathe Hibernate as it took longer to recover to the desktop and seemed to often screw things up over repeated Hibernations.

I had searched for nearly an hour (in 2011) trying to find how to solve this silly issue. I am usually pretty good at finding such answers but I didn't that time and gave up. But finally, I found the answer the other day and it's hidden but so simple. Most here on Seven Forums this is probably old news to, but hopefully this will help someone like me in the future:

To Change Hibernation Time in Windows 7:

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/778-power-plan-settings-change.html

Start>type "power" and choose "Power Options"
Click from left menu, "Change when the computer sleeps"
Click "Change advanced power settings"
Expand "Sleep>Hibernate After" and enter a desired time
(mine was set for 180 minutes (3 hours) and I changed it to 2160 minutes (36 hours) )
