Folder Changes its own View and Group By

For years, I've had my downloads folder on medium icons, grouped and sorted by date modified. My OS default folder settings are Detail view, sorted by name, no grouping. All of a sudden a few weeks ago, my downloads folder started changing to default settings seemingly of its own accord. It refuses to stay in my custom settings. I've been trying to run tests but can't locate a trigger cause or even program. Sometimes it doesn't switch for hours, sometimes it switches inside of five minutes. Sometimes it switches when I go to check on a new download, and sometimes it doesn't switch. I'm not sure how to proceed at this point, any advice would be appreciated.
