Folder Copy by Cut&Paste : extremely SLOW

I am watching for some time that copying of folders is working extremely slow on my system ( I really wish back the times of Windows 98 when this worked quickly ).

An Example : copy of 696MB onto an USB Stick.
A flash tool tells me about the writing speed of 4,2 MB/s.
But what happens/is shown in the detail of Windows 7 :
it will probably take 23 hours (!) to finish and the speed is believe it or not 45-50 KB/s (!!!) ?
Why are these programmers lying in such a way ? If calculators would similarly work we wouldn't be satisfied I think.

If I copy with e.g. robocopy I can't see any acceleration.

If I shut off the virus scanner I also see no effect ( perhaps a little bit faster...? ).

BTW : if I copy from partition to partition I also get poor results - so 5-10 MB/s.

Is this normal ? Can I in any way tune the system to copy faster ???

It's a bit hard to comment without knowing exactly what you're doing. But clearly on the surface of it you have a problem with your PC!. Transfer speed depend on number and size of files etc but 2-4MB/s is reasonable for a drag & drop to a USB. eg I can drag and drop a 100MB zip file in 20secs to a USB 2. flash drive/stick.
I can suggest some standard checks:
1) Check device manager for any warnings.
2) Check you HDD (Computer,Properties,Tools or chkdsk)
3) Run a speed test on your HDD.
4) Try a USB flash to USB flash copy (using different USBs)
5) Run memtest
6) Run Malwarebytes

Edit: I had to leave - but as I said in 1), 2) Check out your HDD performance. Also use the disk manufacturers diagnostic utilities. For speed check try
http://crystalmark.info/download/index-e.html
For other disk info (SMART data) try CrystalDiskInfo on the same site.
Sata partition to partition drag & drop copies should be on the order of 50MB/s or greater. The sequential tests from Crystal Disk info should be on the order of 100+MB/s.
The fact that your HDD partition to partition performance is poor makes the HDD the first thing to check.

USB to USB slow transfers may show may point to USB controller/driver issues.

Memory tests (use the inbuilt Windows) and malware testing are obvious things to check.

Then report back your findings.

There's so much to cover on this topic. Instead I'll just hit a few key points to start.
- Bing/Google a utility called DiskBench.exe to benchmark your data transfer times on various disks
- If you have an unreasonably slow hard drive, check your S.M.A.R.T. statitistics. Search for hard drive health utilities
- What's your configuration? Windows 7 experience numbers? etc.

5.) Don't know how to run "memtest". The command is not known on my system.

I will make further tests ( probably over the weekend ).

I understand your frustration!

Your HDD health looks good to me. Your speed performance is very poor for a sata internal HDD! They look more like an external USB 2 HDD. Here are mine
ide speed.JPG

Have you run Malwarebytes with the latest updates???

I'm puzzled. Here are a couple of options to try.
(1) Have a look at what's consuming resources with Resource Monitor.

(2) Boot into SAFE MODE and see what your performance is like.

(3) Down load a light weight linux - Puppy linux (I use it sometimes).
Boot the linux OS from the CD. Mount your HDD. Play around with a few files transfers and get a handle on performance from this angle.

Your data also seem more normal to me. May my migration from Vista have somehow influenced this behaviour of my system with regard to the hdd ?

I have to admit I have a very bloated system : about 135 processes, about 135000 handles ( whatever this means ).

I don't have this program Malwarebytes : I will try to find it.

As a Linux system I prefer PCLinuxOS. But I am only a casual user of Linux and don't know how to get the performance data of the hdd there.

I would say "bloated" was an understatement. As I type this I have 58 processes running.
Get rid of the bloat. Find out what are the "hangers on" and stop them. You have to start using some judgement here.
Have a look at your startup processes and prune them back.

I strongly suggest you look at performance when booting into SAFE MODE.
To do this boot and tap F8. Select boot in safe mode (it's normal for your screen to look low resolution in this mode).

I'm not a big linux user either. It's a windowed OS and only takes a bit of a play to do some file copy tests.

If it all gets a bit much then consider backup, Clean install.

Malwarebytes download.

Thank you so much for your effort to help me.

Sorry, I don't want to install from the beginning because I am lazy and don't want to lose the work of 2 years ( starting with Vista... ).

I was somewhat successful : first I ran the memtest ( Windows inbuilt via F8 on booting ) and got no errors.

Then I ran Malwarebytes and was very surprised to find some .sys and .dll files and also registry items which were suspicious. I removed them all.

Then I rebooted in SAFE MODE an run the CrystalDiskMark program again. You see the result in the 1st attachment. This was a little bit better than before.

In the 2nd atachment you see the speed of a 3GB copy process - not so fast but about 2 times faster than I remember it was before I started this thread.

Then I rebooted into my non-administrative user account : 98 processes before I started to work ( I must say that I ran the autoruns program and deleted/deactivated some processes - alas I don't quite understand how to handle this program ). Then I repeated the CDM program and was VERY SURPRISED to find the data shown in the 3rd attachment below.

But I am still far away from the speed of your disk.

Windows should do it automatically - but try defragmenting your disk. Type defragment in your start box and follow the guides.

My results are probably as high I'm going to get with this type of spinning disk.
Speeds will also depend on where on the disks the tests are run.
Note the blue graph. When you start filling the disk (working on the inner tracks) see how the speed drops - radial velocity for you.
HDT_1TB.JPG

I would think you should be getting 90+ MB/s on the sequential test.

I want to add that I also deleted all my restore points ( 15GB ) and added 1 new one.
Don't know whether the improvement in hdd access is in any context with that or whether its a seeming repair.

I'll report after defragmentation.

Here the results after defrag : no change towards the 90MB/s to be seen.
By the way : what is the Windows Experience Index of your ( Hitachi ) HDD ?

I think we can then finish the thread as by your tips I got a real improvement.
Any way to fine tune the hdd access with the help of Windows 7 ?
