folder settings randomly resetting

I have no idea why but I for some reason the settings I apply to specific folders have been getting reset at seemingly random times.

By folder settings I mean sorting options mostly. I have to frequently re-select my pictures folder to have the option to sort by 'date created' and then select it. It keeps defaulting back to sorting by name. almost all folders have the same problem! it also keeps defaulting back to the "details" option for all folders when they were originally "thumbnails"

Ok, here's the trick

Navigate to each of the special 'My' folders (Documents, Music, Pictures, Videos) under your user profile

Arrange those folders just how you like them, columns shown, column position, any personalized view, sort, group you decide. These act as templates for every folder of that type (Document/General, Music, Pictures, Videos).

If you have mixed types in 'typed' folders, Windows sometimes gets confused. You might try opening any folder, pressing Organize (top left), press the view tab, and press Reset Folders.

Your special folder 'My' Documents... are on external drives? I don't think they are.

You cannot reset folders on external drives? Sure you can, unless they are remote network drives.

Try the first part - arrange My Documents the way you want it to look, then create a new folder - customize it to be a General (that's what document folders are classified), put some test files in it and see how that folder presents the contents. It should be exactly the way you made My Documents look.
