Solved Folder thinks it is a music folder... how do I change that?

I have a folder called Temp on an internal drive labeled B: The properties of this folder is set to "General Items", and when I view the folder through Explorer (showing Details) I get the expected headings Name, Date modified, Type, Size, etc...

However, when I through any app (TextPad, WordPad, Chrome, IrfanView-Save for Web, etc) choose Save As... and navigate to that B:\Temp folder, it shows up as a music folder! With headings Name, #, Title, Contributing artists, Album, etc.

Most annoying!

Does anyone have any hints about how to change this so that it always shows up as a "General Items" type of folder?

Hello OppfinnarJocke,

This is most likely due to Automatic Folder Type Discovery. "Automatic Folder Type Discovery" is when Windows will automatically change the folder template of a folder to match the file type of the last file added or saved in the folder. For example, if your folder contains music files and you add a picture file, then Windows may change the folder template and view to the "Picture" template to match the new picture file. Basically just what you did.

If you like, you can use the tutorial below to set a specific template (steps 2 to 6) to be the default for all folders to disable Automatic Folder Type Discovery. Afterwards, you will still be able to set folder views and templates how you like though, but without Automatic Folder Type Discovery changing them for you.

I did no 2 in that tutorial, ran the bat-file "To Set General Items Folder Template as Default for All Folders". Unfortunately it did not help...

What happened was that Explorer shut down, and did not come up again. I restarted the machine, and I still have this same problem; in Explorer the folder shows correctly, doing Save As... from Textpad (for instance) and navigating to B:\Temp, it is still shown as Music.

It could very well have something to do with "Automatic Folder Type Discovery", but not in the way you describe. If I save a text-file from Textpad, the next time I do Save As... from Textpad, the B:\Temp folder still shows as a music folder.

The folder template was already set to General Items, which is why Explorer shows it correctly, I guess. But this has to be a bug within W7 (or Explorer). Maybe something with assuming that B: is a disk drive...?

EDIT: And it is only this particular B:\Temp folder. I have other folders, like B:\Music, but navigating there from a Save As... dialog shows those folders as General Items even though the folders only contain wav, flac, and mp3 files. Very strange...

Sounds like something interefered with the .bat file preventing it from restarting explorer. Be sure everything is closed before running the .bat.

As a test, see if setting the folder template to "General Items" from within the "Save as" dialog will have it stick.

I re-ran the bat-file and now Explorer restarted fine. But no change, B:\Temp still thinks it is a music folder when I do Save As...

I tried setting the "General Items" property from within the Save As... dialog. No change, B:\Temp still show up as music folder.

This must be a bug in W7x64pro.
