Folder tree expansion causing explorer to jump down

I have just upgraded to Windows 7 and have discovered an annoyance with Windows Explorer.

When I expand a folder's contents (tree) by clicking on the arrow icon, the entire contents of the left panel jump to the bottom of the visible screen (rather than just the subfolders expanding).

The annoyance is that every time I expand a tree in the Explorer, I also have to scroll the contents of the left panel back up (because it jumped down).

I hope this makes some sense. For example, in Vista, if I expanded a folder tree, only the sub folders would expand and move downward.

Any suggestions?

Thank you

Let me ask you this, to make sure I understand what is happening. When you click the arrow next to a folder, do you got to the bottom of the list of subfolders, or does the folder you clicked the arrow next to appear at the top of the list?

The folder I clicked the arrow next to appears at the bottom of the list (or actually, the bottom of the explorer window - the left panel of the explorer is automatically scrolling up thereby putting the folder I clicked the arrow next to at the bottom).

Thank you for your help. This is driving me nuts

This is a major irritant in Win7 Explorer and a change from behavior of previous versions. Many have complained about it other threads and other forums:

http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/26502-windows-explorer-left-hand-pane.html

Note above includes pointers to other threads, including a video which illustrates the problem. Note also many are so irritated they've given up on Win7 Explorer and installed the free 3rd party Classic Shell. I cannot vouch for that, just mentioning it.

http://www.sevenforums.com/customization/94227-windows-explorer-folder-browsing.html

Some say MS calls the behavior "by design". If so we need an authoritative statement from MS describing -- in detail -- the rationale behind this.

Okay, here's an odd addendum to this. I went through each of the threads and even watched the video, but my explorer does not behave this way. I've tried it on two desktops and two laptops, and each of them behave as they should. No folders jump to the bottom. Folders with LOTS of subfolders jump to the top. Folders with only a few subfolders stay put...but again, none jump down as shown in the video.

This behavior like the common cold has no cure that I am aware of. My fix was a third party file manager. I hope MS realizes that such a simple bug can be such a huge pain in the a__. Maybe they will address it in SP1.

The reason I didn't respond to this yet, is because on two laptops, on running 7 pro, and the other 7 HP, I can not reproduce what has been described. Both work as macgyvr describes. I'm wondering, who here that has the problem upgraded from Vista without a clean install. By clean install I mean formated the hard drive and installed 7.

My Win7 install was totally clean, likewise my brother's. We both have the Explorer "jump down" problem.

If it never happens on those who upgraded from Vista, that would be interesting. Do we know that?

Regardless of that, if there's truly a difference in behavior on similarly-configured machines and using identical problem replication steps, that itself is a problem. It should be consistent, one way or another.

I was actually think those that did a direct upgrade from Vista, since those that do tend to have a number of problems.

Usually, I can pinpoint the cause of these apparent glitches, but I have no clue what would cause such behavior. Until I learn more (which might be a while since school starts for me tomorrow, and I shouldn't even be awake right now) try opening an elevated command prompt, and typing "SFC /SCANNOW". If a corrupted system file is causing the problem, that should fix it.

Lots of people including me with fresh installs on both 32bit and 64bit platforms have this problem. This does not occur every time, but only on certain specific situations.

just a quick question for my curiosity.... does Microsoft review these technical forums and make considerations to include these features, enhancements in there next OS version or service packs?
