I have tried connecting to my router with both wireless and lan cable but they both fail. What is strange is that my vista laptop (currently using) has no problems connecting either wirelessly or using the same lan cable as my desktop failed with.

My windows 7 desktop was working fine earlier today but after I went out it installed the updates and since then no amount of rebooting or restarting of the router has fixed the problem. Any ideas?

First thing to try is a System Restore to before the updates were applied, see if that fixes it.

Also look in Device Manager and see if anything is flagged with a yellow mark.

Is there a yellow triangle over your Connection Icon in your task bar
Are you being assigned an IP?
Hit start type cmd>ipconfig /all hit enter
See what it is giving you for an IP. If its a 169.xx.x.x or something outside your DHCP range your not receiving an IP from your router.
Also what are you using for DNS settings...I use goolge public DNS and never have a problem.
First hit start/type cmd @ the prompt type ipconfig /flushdns hit enter
Hit start/control panel/network and internet/network sharing center on left hand side hit change adapter settings.
Right click on your adapter setting for your LAN select properties.
Double click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCIP/IPV4) select use the following DNS Server address and enter 8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4 select ok.
