"Font Viewer for Windows 7"

One Little TheFontThing Problem

Just discovered that it won't let me put Open Type fonts into a collection, only True Type. I'm sure I'm just doing something wrong... Normally I put fonts into collections by dragging from an open window of fonts. Is there a way to point TFT to a specific folder? I see Browse, but no way to specify where it should go. Ugh. Thanks.

I don't use collections. I put my fonts into subfolders within a big folder of uninstalled fonts. Then click the browse tab and navigate to where I store them.

To Fallstar - I just recently got a new computer with Windows 7 after years and years of using WinXP. I thought I'd be lost without The Font Thing, but tried you suggestion and it works. Thank you!

To Scarfe - Also took your advice and downloaded Ampsoft's Font Viewer. Thank you also.

Happy New Year!

Thank you, thank you, Fallstar!!!

It looks as though "The Font Thing" will not work with Windows 7.

Go to the website's download page at LINK and download the non-installer, the second version labeled as Zipped EXE and help files (483K). The installer-package version is apparently not compatible with W7 (or 64-bit, which is what I run).

I unzipped the contents into a folder I named The Font Thing in my downloads folder, then double click the tft.exe file to launch it. If you get a popup/notification just click OK, and The Font Thing will run. Granted it's a little quirky at times, but it's useable.

Another *BIG* thank you, Fallstar, for this work-around! I'm also a dedicated fan of The Font Thing, and this solution worked perfectly for me. Thank you so very much again!!!! :D

Would like to try The Font Viewer, but Sophos A/V prevents access to the site as a malware host:

High Risk Website Blocked

  • Location: members.ozemail.com.au/~scef/tft.html
  • Access has been blocked as the threat Mal/HTMLGen-A has been found on this website.

Anybody have a "safe" source for the ZIP file referenced file above in this thread that does not include the SETUP.EXE installer, but rather is just the product files themselves?

Thanks.

Just in passing, one of the "Best Free Font Managers" sites I passed through highly recommended NexusFont for Windows.

I downloaded and installed it. Seems to give me what I'm looking for and is "modern", i.e. it installs and runs on Win7 x64 without problem, and does not have a "legacy Win98 appearance".

Can you please post this non-installer ZIP file... perhaps as an ATTACHMENT on this forum? Maybe on some FTP site or other location you have access to for upload, and that from which I can download "safely"?

The web site pointed to by your link is rated "malware" by Sophos A/V (which I run) and I can't get get to it either with Firefox or IE. I know, I can turn off Sophos and overcome the "danger" but if the site is reported negatively I'd rather not take a chance.

As I mentioned in my earlier reply, based on the comments made in this thread and my search for a true Win7-compatible installer/product, I have installed the Nexus Font Manager which seems quite powerful, friendly, and worthwhile. But I'd like to at least try this orphan/legacy "The Font Thing" that seems to have so many admirers.

Still looking for some place out there to download the non-installer ZIP version of the product, but which is NOT the "malware reported" site of the author.

Thanks.

(edit: re 'The Font Thing')

Fallstar & OP - thank you both.

I've been looking for just this kind of thing to view multiple fonts at once for ages.

Couldn't find a way to do it with any of my Adobe software (which I think to be honest is a short-coming if it's not there, considering the pedigree of products such as Illustrator / PS etc)

Magic guys,

Thanks ;-)

I am a long time Font Thing user and was bummed when I read it wasn't compatible with Win7.
Some good suggestions here.

1) The Font Thing - Non-Installer package. I don't like the flakiness of TFT in Win 7. Random errors, and it locks up when trying to install fonts. No thanks.

2) NexusFont - Nice...but when viewing my 350+ dingbats at 36pt or so, it really bogs down and runs choppy...the pointer will freeze for 5-6 seconds at a time when I try to scroll down to see more fonts. I have a new Intel i5 with 4gb of ram, so my computer is plenty fast. I thought my whole computer froze for a moment, but it was just really choppy. Because of the choppiness of it, it's not usable for me. If it didn't run choppy, I'd LOVE this program.

3) AMP Font Viewer - Very nice...and a little more like The Font Thing. Although, it would be nice to see a list of installed and uninstalled fonts in the same view where I can just scroll through them all instead of going back and forth. But not a big deal. I like how you can preview an entire folder of fonts at once. I have chosen to use AMP instead of The Font Thing.

Both NexusFont and AMP Font Viewer seem better than The Font Thing, and once I get used to AMP, I'm sure I will like it a lot more. So this TFT not being compatible with Win 7 is a blessing in disguise.

Thanks guys.

Came across this site whilst googling for "The Font Thing for Windows".

I have Windows Vista Home Basic 32-bit OS but I thought I would give Fallstar's solution a go and YES, it works perfectly. Well so far anyway.

I used only The Font Thing prior to getting a computer with Windows Vista OS and when I found out I couldn't use it with the new system, I installed AMP Font Viewer which I found to be OK but I didn't care for it as much as The Font Thing so, when I gave Fallstar's solution a go and found that it worked, I immediately switched over and am once again happy to be using it.

Many thanks Fallstar even though it's two years late.

Thank you for the help in being able to use The Font Thing with Windows 7. Fallstar, I followed your instructions and was able to open TFT, however, I am not able to install any of my special collected fonts :( I opened the zip in my Downloads folder and into a new folder ( TFT ). The fonts I want to install are in a folder in Docs. Am I doing something wrong? I would greatly appreciate any help as I have been using TFT for yrs and loved it.

Thanks
Marie

I've recently acquired another font-related product (probably for no real good reason), named Typograf.

It's from the same people who sell "Security Task Manager" which is a product I've been using for years if I don't want to spend the effort to get into TASKMGR.

Anyway, Typograf is very nice. Free trial if you want to experiment.

I have Windows Vista Home Basic 32-bit OS and I don't know how much different it is to Windows 7. Like you, however, I cannot install a font from a file in Documents though no problem from a CD.
