Solved Force List View in Libraries

Somewhere, and I cannot find it, I found a post that detailed how to force list view for all folders including Libraries.

If someone knows of the document I speak of, or knows how I can accomplish this I would be grateful. I understand it requires some registry edits and does come with it's own risks..which I accept.

Not sure about the Libraries view, but try this for the rest.

When in a Library folder, at the upper left, click in the little down arrow to the right of "Arrange by:", then click on "Name". That will force an alphabetical listing of all the files in all the folders in that Library. I don't know how to do that in non-Libraries folders.

Not sure about the Libraries view, but try this for the rest.

For some reason I cannot fathom, the Apply to Folders box on my computer is grayed out.

Thanks for the replies but the question was specifically for the Libraries. I've since spoken to a friend/co-worker who knows, but I'll have to wait until Tuesday to find out.

I'll post the answer once I find out, but only if the modifications required do not inhibit normal operation of the OS.

I should have done a bit more digging, the answer is more simple than I originally expected.


In Windows Explorer navigate to the folder you want to change; not via Libraries, the actual folder.

Right click on the folder (e.g. Pictures) and choose Properties.

Choose the Customize tab.

Change 'Optimize this folder for :' to General Items.

Optional : Check 'Also apply this template to all subfolders.

Click Apply
