Is there a way to force windows to only use the Home Network?
My Pc is a desktop pc (Windows 7 x64 ultimate) using a wireless adapter to access my wireless router then internet. Windows keeps changing the Network and Sharing Center active network to Public. I have tried to set NLA to delayed start and that works sometimes. However I still have to go into Network and Share Center from time to time and manually set the darn Active network to Home Network. Is there a way to edit the registry to Force my desktop PC to ONLY use Home Network?

Thank you Very much.

Unless your PC actually connects to a different network, it is still using your home network just thinks it doesn't.
Try disabling IPv6 in the properties of your network card (just untick the box) and if possible on your router.

My first thought was that you added a network as public in error . In which case you should be able to view it and delete it.
But is it possible you got on of the new xfinity wifi router /modem? They broadcast public wifi on your new Arris router /modem (i think its a separate antenna). If so, I have been told by Comcast that it can be disabled.
Note that I got one and returned it as I don't trust Comcast not to turn it back on. Plan on buying my own.

Btw, if there is a public network close by and its signal is stronger than your WiFi, it will pick up the public network first. In this case you may need to upgrade your router to something more powerful. Or it is possible that you may simply have to move your router to a central location. I would mount on wall a foot from the ceiling if you need mobility in the house... Otherwise, I would put it on the desk where i usually work.

The odd thing is that it only ever picks up my network/router. Yet when it does it defaults to public. My router is a mofi router and i have fire2wire as isp. I have never connected to any other network other then my own. This computer never travels as it is a full tower desktop system. I will give the ipv6 thing a try and get back to you.

I made sure that the router had ipv6 off and that the wifi adapter had it unchecked. I noticed today that it keeps switching to public despite the fact that I have not lost connection to my router at all today. I have literally had to manually change it back to private 5x today. Is there a way to force windows to only ever use private connection. To force it to stay private?

I have 90% signal to my router and it never drops below 70% The closest next network is 30%. I live in a rural area and the houses here are pretty far apart. One to two acres apart, the reat of the networks that i can see are 10% sometimes 20% signal.

Windows logs onto the strongest signal. Probably not a good idea to to disable this. Do some detective work. What is public signal that you log into? How many strong is signal? How strong is your wifi signal?
Download wifi analyzer (ot similar) to your phone to help you find answers.

Just poking around on my daughters laptop. Window 7 security updates. We have a router and access point with two separate names, but I can see neighbors routers, and a public router.
If you left click on public router, there is a checkbox "connect automatically". This should NOT be checked! Is it checked on your pc?

So are you saying that it recognizes your own router as public? If so, go into network and sharing center. You will see your betwork and ut is listed as public in blue, which is actually a link. Click on this link. A window will ooen and cheng it to home (or to work), and click ok. Done.

This is what I have been doing. I keep changing it to home and it keeps changing back to public.

The nearest router in my neighborhood has a signal strength of only 30% on a good day. My signal strength to my router is 70 - 90% never below 70%. I always only connect to my router and no others. When i go to the "Manage Wireless networks" only my network is listed. Also for some reason when I view all the networks near me the check box is check that says "connect automatically" When I uncheck the box it rechecks itself.

1. IPv6 is enabled on the router. disable that, especially since AFAIK your ISP does not offer any IPv6 adresses.
2. WINS is enabled
3. Change DNS to 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 (these are open DNS adresses)

Once you have disabled IPv6 go into device manager and uninstall the Microsoft ISATAP Adapter.

Sorry. Did not see ipconfig. Agree with cyanna. Mostly. At least i woyld disable wins and change dns server to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.4 (googles dns servers) on your router. Cyannas selection is fine. Ping them all and see which responds more quickly.
