FPS issue

I recently built a new PC with a patriot SSD, quad core i5 at 2.88 Ghz, 4 gigs of ram on a gigabyte P55 board, ATI 5850, and windows 7 64 bit. My old PC was a core 2 at i think 2.4 and a GTS8800 320 MB with 2 gigs of system mem and XP pro.

That said, this new setup should run games far better. And it does for the most part. But like with my old system when the action gets real fast and heavy the FPS slows till it's probably a couple FPS and is unplayable. This also happened on my old PC, but it had to be either the drive being accessed or memory. Yet now i have double the memory and a SSD with trim activated and i can't understand why this is happening. I have 3 times the ram on the video card too, plus it's a much faster card. Even when i dropped the game settings to about medium like my old PC i still get this. any idea what i might look at?

Often caused by a bad driver. download this latency checker and run it. Let us know the results. DPC Latency Checker

Well, it never showed any red bars and the green bars usually nstayed at or below 500us. It said "this machine should be able to handle real time streaming of audio/video without dropouts". Absolute max said 758 and current latency fluxuated between 90 and 450 or thereabouts. Dont' know what any of this means exactly, but according to the site it appears i have no issues. But then why the low FPS during intense scenes. Not all intense scenes by the way, but many.

reinstall or update or downgrade your video drivers to stable version (try to install the drivers for x64 that came with your GPU cd bundle....I KNOW this bad option but yep this works sometimes as the new drivers might be in beta phase).., i had the same problem now its all working fine.

Actually you may be right. I normally use the CD driver and never update video drivers because i have never once seen a benefit and almost every time seen some sort of issue cause when updating. But this time i used the latest because i think i couldn't find a 64 bit driver on the CD or some such thing.....can't recall exactly but i think that was why. In any case i will look thru the CD and see if there is a 64 bit drive i missed. Is it necessary to remove the old driver or can i just install over it? I know that long ago before i stopped updating vid drivers you had to not only remove them but do a clean uninstall and all that BS. I hope thats not still a necessity.

i would recommend you to make a clean install of the drivers, if your drivers have that overwrite option thn go for it else uninstall and reinstall the old ones..
