Free Internet usage monitor?

Hi,

A friend asked me to try and find a freeware internet usage monitor so he can monitor his home internet usage - he has a teenage son who eats bandwidth for breakfast, lunch and dinner

I've had a look around, but can't quite find something that fits the bill. Ideally he is after something simple (upload + download), but is also interested in something that has the ability to record the URL's of websites that are accessed.

Does anyone know of something that might fit his requirements? He would run this from his Windows 7 Home Premium PC.

This a single computer or more than one? If more than one then any software solution goes out the windows unless it is run on all computers, and then take the numbers from each and add them up to get a total.

Hi Stormy. Its 2 computers, but I was under the impression the bandwidth used is measured from the router, but now I see what you mean....its measured from the PC LAN adpater right? I'll trake that into consideration.

Yes routers measure it. Installed software is only good for determining what one computer uses.

If your friend really wants to stop the excess bandwidth use providing his router allows application specific blocking, have him put strong password on the router and and in whatever application(s) his son is using for his downloading; wither block outright or if available limit the time said application(s) can run (mine nicely has both for limiting/blocking both computer and/or specific applications).

I'm guessing your friend is on an internet plan that has monthly bandwidth limits. If so anf the son doesn't want to cooperate and cut back on his usage, hand him the bill and let him pay the overage charges.

I would look for a solution from your router because if the network users are transferring files from one pc to another on the network, or streaming to tv's or other such activity it may skew the monitoring graph when the traffic is inside the network and not on the isp's pipes.

I would recommend Networx Software for Enterprises, Intranets and the Internet, I use it on all my computers, and it compiles nice information about the bandwidth usage in hours, days, months... I really like that one..
