Free up RAM

Solution: put in more RAM. Laptop has 6GB RAM, gaming PC 8GB, and work PC, soon to be 8GB. 2GB is nothing. My x64 PDF reader can use that much!

Pokora, depending on your system, your ram might not cost that much and upgrading ram is the cheapest fix to speed up a comp. Can you fill in your specs so we know what kind of system you have and what ram you would need?

How to Free Up Phyiscal Memory ?

Besides opening Task Manager, Stopping Processes or Services.msc, which I have 6 GB installed, Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-2100 CPU @ 3.10GHz only running Windows and Firefox v14.0.1 and Notepad, is there any quick way of dumping/clearing memory without rebooting. As it appears Win7, does not free up memory when you close applications, as they are not listed under Processes, and to total up all processes running, would not equal 4.67GB under Performance with CPU at 3%, with System Idle Process at 82 24K

Even typing, copy & paste is sooooo slow, and lets not forget Win7's forever NOT RESPONDING.

I guess after 29+ years using computers, I feel like I am using an IBM Intel 8088 @ 4.77 MHz or WinME...is there any software that would handle this issue with Win7, as in clearing memory automatically not in use or needed ? Maybe I am not seeing the obvious....Thank you, Doc

Instant Memory Cleaner is not working as I hoped it would and then I tried downloading and installing Koshy John.com MemCleaner.exe, however during install Norton Alert to Not Safe.

So I am back to Square One, 92 Processes running, 1-6% CPU usage and 45% Physical Memory in use, with only FireFox and PopTray running. 20 Aug 2012....Doc

I found Instant Memory Cleaner, it worked once, does not seem constant once launched, only issue is you have to manually launch every time you boot or place in Start Up and it keeps the Physical Memory at about 2GB-3GB. Another I found, Vasilios Freeware-Instant Memory Cleaner, more effective with Windows XP...so I did not use it on either Win7 64-bit and a Win7 32-bit, I run. Besides Vista & XP, I even have a couple three PC's still with DOS 6.22, Win95, Win98, and WinME. I never kept Windows 3.0 or 3.11, nor 5.25 floppy drives.

As now I have 92 process running, 2% CPU, and 47% Memory used, and all I am running is Firefox w/10 tabs, another FF window w/4 tabs, I do allot of research, and I probably should try Chrome, as FF Funnelcake 14, even crashes.

And my most recent hunt is a Boot-able DOS CD, as I have another PC that no matter what I use as Ultimate Windows XP Boot Disk, UBUNTU Restore for Windows, Spotmau Power Suite Boot Fix and Install Windows, XP Full System Disk, and even the System Recovery Disks I created, nothing allows me to Boot, Use DOS to Reformat, and re-Install Windows XP Pro. As that PC has no 3.5" floppy, and I have an Iomega 144MB USB Floppy Disk Drive, which you cannot Boot from USB, that I know of.

And another set of System Recovery Disks (OEM) that worked on another PC, however, incompatible with this System. Propriety BIOS/ROM/CMOS I presume Make & Model.

I am a User, not a Wizard, so when I encounter obstacles, I try to prevail...makes me wonder if I had kept using Apple/MAC all these years, would I have had less headaches with IBM/Window PC's. Thanks for your reply, did not mean to bump..Doc

if memory is listed as available then its effectively free memory.

One way to free up memory is do something like copy a large file like a dvd iso image from one drive to another, this will chew up ram to pu tthe file in cache but when its done it will be flushed from cache and as such mark that memory as free, this is effectively what those paid for ram apps do. They fill up memory then unfill it.

Disabling superfetch makes ram fill up slower but that may slow your system down especially if using a slow hdd.
