Fresh OS drivers instalation

Guys,

According to this tut Setting Up Windows 7 it is advised that we should run the full OS update, and that any drivers in device manager should be updated, BEFORE installing any of the chipset, VGA, and other drivers from manufacturers . Is that really so?

I actually start with all the necessary chipset, VGA, sound, LAN, etc, an then I go onto the OS update. Is this correct?

Hi,

When installing/upgrading Windows, the standard drivers from the install DVD will be the ones that are installed. For complete driver update guarantee I recommend to install Windows then run Windows Update to see if any new hardware drivers appear. Afterwards, download any drivers you can from the manufacturer website and install them.

Yes, load drivers from windows update before your pc manufacturer. The pc manufacturer updates drivers less often than Microsoft.

i clicked on the link to the tutorial in your post and i noticed that the author was expelled from win7 forums. whether that is due to bad advice or bad behavior, i dont know. i assume that since the tutorials werent deleted, they must have some relevance.

i think most would agree that you should install chipset drivers first. and i've seen a few motherboard manufacturers websites that list the order you should install the drivers. and i had a biostar motherboard driver installation disc that listed the drivers in the order they recommended them to be installed. the chipset driver was always first.

This is not XP, no matter how hard it is to change the old ways. MS spent a fortune getting drivers in the Win7 installer. Under the WHQL program manufacturers were paid to develop drivers for Win7 or MS developed them itself - all to avoid holding out so we're forced to buy newer hardware as happened in early Vista.

As a result the Win7 installer is driver-complete, with newer quickly updated via optional Windows Updates. Any drivers then missing in Device Manager should be imported from the manufacturer's webpage for your computer or device model.

Only if there are performance issues should drivers given by installer or Updates be changed with restore points set to roll back to the drivers preferred by Win7.
