Friend's friends' kid installed Win 7 Ultimate, not activated

She, the 1st friend, loaned it out - it had Vista. It came back with win 7 ultimate. She was hoping I could recover their Music files.
Seems the friend's Kid installed Windows 7 Ultimate, but the activation either failed or he didn't bother...
I think the kid activated MS Office Professional..

So we have a not genuine version, build 7601. Yes I've tried a few Product keys - it looks like the last one I tried ( - bhwgc ..with no luck, go figure) is stored in the system, or in this report .
Also, there have been quite a few different Product ID's appearing in the control panel, system info.
from various 00426 - OEM's - 8992662 - 00006, 00400, 00497
00426 - 065 - 2110075 - 86634
and a Belarc report: 00426 - 067 -2714777-86683 ( the same as MS IE..)

If the installed Windows 7 is an OEM Windows, you cannot get a Key for that Windows on this computer. If it's a Microsoft retail Windows 7, it cannot be installed on two computers at the same time -- one must be uninstalled.

Places like Altex Electronics of Austin TX has numerous OEM [and can still order I think MS 32/64bit retail] Windows 7 Professional. Others say Newegg is another, amongst several others, reliable source.

Changing product id's

1. Lets say I could still get a valid win 7 ultimate package, how would I enter to change the product ID to go with the new Product Key .?

2. Let's say I hit a good Product Key, that Key should be somewhat dependent upon the product ID, right? If my Product ID keeps changing, I would have to get lucky to get the 2 paired up properly at the same time. Correct?

3. And, why does my Product ID keep changing??

You can not buy a legal Windows 7 product key by itself.
It is only sold with the legal media.

The way I buy my Windows 7 is very simple.
I go to my local computer dealer and order Windows 7.
I get the DVD and COA key in a package made by Microsoft.

So JACK - let's say i get a new package, / the works. How do I enter the product ID and Product Key without reinstalling the whole deal?? Got it set up, just would like it functional, ya know?

You are very unlikely to be able to get a valid copy of Win 7 Ultimate since MS only allows Win 7 Pro to be sold now. Pretty much every copy of Win 7 Ultimate you find now is going to be a counterfeit or otherwise illegal copy. I'm afraid your only safe option will be to buy Win 7 Pro from a safe source, such as Newegg, and install it (in fact, Newegg is the only vendor I would trust to sell a legitimate copy; even Amazon has been known to sell counterfeits).

IF and i mean IF

you have managed to get hold of a legitimate Ultimate key, all you have to do is enter it via
change product key on the system gui, no reinstall required.

What it will NOT do is validate the Office install, a seperate licence is needed.

As for all those different product ID's, they change everytime you input a new key.
(you tried Dell/Acer/lenovo so thats 3 to start with)

Found this in a tutorial, So, I'm guessing teh "kid" took advantage of the free upgrade back in 2009.?? Not that this helps me any. My old XP laptop is getting flaky, so need to get off the dime and do something.. Thanks for your input.
