From Win 7 -> 10 and Linux as dual-boot

1) I fear Win7 will no longer be maintained by MS once W10 starts costing $$.
2) I have both, WIN7 (no touch 64bit) and Win8 (with touch 32bit) on 2 computers. I did not like the initial W8 installation requiring a connected MS account and continuous internet connection to use computer. I don't like spies.
3) In view of this situation I am considering Ubuntu Linux version as a second O/S as dual boot.
4) I can not eliminate MS Win, too many of my works requires this MS O/S.

In what order should I do the changes? Pitfalls?
I am fairly experiences and can follow good exact instructions. I try to keep away from Registry.

5) My friend has computer W7. Can not install. Can I remotely install Win10 using Teamviewer 10?
If required I can ask this in a new thread, it makes only sense if it can be done at all.

I should wait for one of the experts to answer that, but my only thought would be to know that your laptop could definitely run Windows 10. Ours were supposed to be able to, but neither of them would and there were driver issues. Even the netbook I have that I know for certain can't run Windows 10 (no graphics driver available) is still classed as eligible for upgrade and has the icon appear.

I think the only way to really know is to try it. Which I guess would mean back-ups system images - belt and braces - of your current set up, and then a clean install of Windows 10 (which you are allowed to do free but I think you have to upgrade first to be eligible for the Clean install boot to work).

I would still urge caution though - I had great difficulty getting Windows 7 back on one machine after a clean install of Windows 10 - took me 10 days. With an upgrade you can check if everything is working ok, but it might not work the same with your existing pre-installed software.

Personally now, I would not upgrade any laptop to Windows 10 - if I could no longer use Windows 7 I'd be a laptop configured to run Windows 10 and with it pre-installed. And then dual boot that with Linux.

I'm sticking with Windows 7 as long as possible - it's a pain doing a clean install these days with updates taking so long, but once installed everything seems to be fine - apart from the occasional issue with monthly updates.

Some of your current favourite programs may not work with Windows 10 (even though some say they will).

Have I got this right? Or were you just talking about keeping Windows 8 and dual booting with Linux? That might be the best option. You can set W8 up to behave like W7.

Situation:
Computer 1: Desktop, bought 2013, Acer Aspire AX3475-ER30P, WIN7. This is the Linux candidate and wants free w10.
Computer 2: Notebook, bought 2014 Acer Switch 10, WIN 8.1. This is W10 candidate. No Linux planned until I am experienced using Linux, by the other Hardware.
Some of my WINprograms are not available in Linux, I need to keep a WIN-machine even if I learn to use Linux superfast.
Some of my required programs are built for WIN-XP. My XP computers have self-retired years ago.

I have a notebook HP Probook 4535s, its hard drive completely dead. May be I should put Linux on this unit onto a new hard drive. I might ask HP and some Linux Forum whether this machine can handle current Linux. ???
