Hi all.
I am brand new to this forum and Windows 7 so please bear with me as at 73 years old I have never been able to learn computer jargon, my computer is a very old self build that I have extensively upgraded and because the case did not have any front ports at all, not even a headphone socket I have just installed a Star Tech 3.5 inch drive bay multi-port panel which I have already got installed on my Windows XP self built PC which works a treat with a similar motherboard.

My problem is that after connecting the HD Audio Socket to the HD Audio plug on the motherboard it is totally dead, the rear audio works fine as does a headphone/mike connected to the front or rear USB.

Can any one help me please and remember to write in plain English and not computer jargon please.

Cheers

obviously, you'll need to make sure that you have the correct drivers for your soundcard, and that they are up to date..

it appears that you may have to update the BIOS, as well - in order to facilitate the hardware changes you've made:
ASRock > Products > Motherboard > G31M-S R2.0 > Download

I'm no expert with the BIOS and I don't usually mess with it, unless I know exactly what I'm doing,
so hopefully someone with more knowledge of these things will give you some good (**one syllable-type) advice on how to proceed..

best not to proceed unless you have good advice on hand...

**no offence, know exactly what you mean..!!:geek:

Thank's mate for the advice, the drivers are up to date and I did go into Bios to change as instructed by the motherboard manual and the front panel instructions which is exactly as I did with my XP PC, seems like Win7 has a lot of problems with the front panel audio.

Cheers mate.
The Canny Lad.

Hello, if I understand you correctly,
try swapping the "Star Tech 3.5 inch drive bay multi-port panel" in your setups.
At least, you'll know if the latter one is faulty, and not the operating system.

That's a good idea, will do that tomorrow, rather tired now, it's what you call old age, haha and I do not want to mess things up with being tired.
Cheers.

Thank you Bugmeister and p5bdkw for all your suggestions but even though I downloaded the latest audio drivers from Asrock it is still the same, I guess I will just give up on this one and use an extension lead from from the rear audio socket for my head phones, maybe it's the motherboard at fault, who knows!!! but I'm not going to buy another motherboard just to find out, haha.

Cheers mates, you are real gentlemen

I am familiar with working with Realtek sound drivers. It should have an entry on the Control Panel in which I have the option to enable/disable front panel detection but I'm not familiar with this Asrock youre saying.. Maybe if it has its own control center, it may have the option to enable/disable front panel detection. In your case, you said it doesn't have front panels at all...

Thank you for replying to my query on the front sockets, I somehow have the Headphones working now but not the microphone of a headset given to me by a mate, but the microphone does not work on rear audio panel or anything else so I guess it is the microphone at fault, do not ask me how I got the headphones working as I do not know, the front audio panel was not detected then it was there the next time I booted to try it once more, strange and wonderful at the same time these computers
Cheers mate
