Future updates?

I know patch Tuesday is soon to be a thing of the past. I believe MS will be pushing updates as and when they become available. My question is, have they already started doing this? The only reason I ask is because this week I have noticed some updates showing up out of cycle. I think one was recommended and a few came up in optional. I installed them all with no side effects. Could it mean this coming Tuesday we will be spared the large amount of normal updates? Fingers crossed!

The out of cycle updates were probably because one of those updates makes it easier for those in charge of lots of computers (domain administrators) to block some upcoming updates related to Windows 10 upgrade and the GWX data collection process. My guess is, MS wanted this update available before Patch Tuesday.

Publishing updates on other than "Patch Tuesday" has been happening for years. This is nothing new.

This series of Windows 10 and GWX data collection updates is the first time that I've noticed "out of band" patches that were optional. I've seen critical ones which are "out of band" because of their critical nature, but this update to the Windows update client is optional. I probably just did not pay much attention to other optional "out of band" updates/patches.

MS publish Important and Security updates on the 2nd Tuesday - optional and recommended OS ones on the 4th Tuesday.
Some products have their own schedules.

I doubt that this will actually change in anything except perception.

The p2p technology in Win10 means that a lot of your update downloading may well come through that means, rather than direct from MS servers., so MS won't have to do as much load-balancing themselves (or run so many servers, thereby reducing their costs markedly!)

It'll be interesting to see how many people complain about exceeding their mobile transfer limits as a result!

I think that I was offered three optional updates on the 1st Tuesday (07 July)... but it could have been a week earlier. It is hard for me to keep up unless I manually check - since I get updates via a corporate server.
