Gadget platform cannot be restarted win7

I turned off "gadget platform" to see if it would cure a gadget problem, but when I tried to turn "gadget platform " back on I get "An error has occurred. Not all features were successfully changed."

How can I restart "windows gadget platform."

You may want to reconsider. Microsoft (and other security companies), last year advised to not use gadgets due to potential security issues. In fact Microsoft no longer offers gadgets (or not what they used to).

Thanks, I am beginning to wonder if an update disabled gadgets platform. When I turned platform off and rebooted a screen came up that said it was installing updates. After that I could not start gadget platform.

My Win 7 installation does not even have an entry for the gadgets like it used to. May have been disabled (my guess).

If you still want gadgets (I still use mine), try the Enable Fix it here

Tried Fix it but it did not work. I still cannot turn on Gadget platform. I still get "error cannot turn on all applications".

If you have a system restore point from before you turned off the platform, that may be your easiest fix

If no help, I'd suggest running the System File Checker next

If it reports error it could not fix, post the sfcdetails.txt from Option Three

Have tried SFC /SCANNOW Command comes back everything is fine. Cannot do a restore as they do not go back far enough. There was no restore points before I originally turned off Gadget platform. Some time back I had had a restore point problem that restore, would sometimes, disappear. I have a dual boot system XP/Win7 and fixed that by extending storage space and turning on on all my drives.
After a lot of research I have found a lot of people seem to have the same problem of getting "error not all features were successfully changed" but no answers except possible problem with a file called $$PendingFiles which I cannot find, I have hidden files turned on.
I hope this can be figured out as I like the gadget option.

I see several threads dealing with this problem advising to run the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT). Not sure the connection, but worth trying, no harm if no help

Also, it occurs to me you might try logging into the hidden Administrator account and see if you can turn it back on there. If you try this, disable it again afterwards

I previously tried system update tool KB947821 twice but to no effect and I have my administrator enabled. I have tried to turn on Telnet client,telnet server and TFTP client just above gadget platform and they do not start either. Is there another way to activate the gadget platform without going to the features on/of window.

OK found sidebar.exe missing. Copied windows sidebar folder from my laptop to my desktop but need to somehow activate this new sidebar as it is still not being seen. Ant suggestions.

That just brings up more questions then answers I'm afraid. sidebar.exe appears to reside in program files, but it is actually present in several places. The fact it was missing is worrisome. The fact that your Turn windows features on or off as a whole appears to be "broken". I'd suggest a Repair Install. It will leave your programs and documents intact. Have a read and see if it's something you would try.

Well after spending all day I found that it is bigger problem than I think. After copying all file from my laptop sidebar folder to my desktop sidebar folder. I noticed each time I tried to turn on Gadget platform and rebooted the sidebar folder was empty. When I first had problem with gadget I downloaded a gadget pack which tried to install a new tool bar and redirect my search etc. I immediately removed this malware program. I think removing this program may have deleted sidebar.exe and it components. Also in the sidebar folder was a bunch of residual file which I had to change ownership just to be able to delete them. When I tried to turn on gadget platform again and reboot the sidebar folder disappeared. When I replaced the sidebar folder and rebooted all deleted file reappeared ! the rest of the programs are still working fine.

So what I have decided to do is buy another hard drive. I have a mobile dock so on the new hard drive I will install an old backup. Once this is working I can then try repair install the main drive. The idea is I can rotate between hard drives if one system dies I can just swap to the other drive and still be up and running.

If you have malware or worse, a repair install will not remove that. I'd do some scanning first. I'd suggest the free Malwarebytes, Superantispyware, and the Windows Defender Offline.

If you don't remove any infection first, only a clean install will return things to normal. A Guy

Thanks A GUY for your help. Just did a full install to an old drive, everything working fine including gadgets, this allows me to be up and running in case I really screw up my main system hard drive. I am waiting for new 1TB hard-drive to arrive from Tiger to do a backup restore, if this works without problems I will then try a repair install on the original hard drive. I am using all this as a learning experience. I have the time now I am retired.
