GeForce GTX 480 and GTX 470 specs finally exposed

Newegg seems to have been shipping some today. A bunch of reviews popped up on there from buyers.

I've not seen any in stock in England yet though.

I wonder why they took so long to make a dx11 card. Even games that don't use dx11 look better in my book. They look more, 3d.

I believe, if I'm not mistaken, i read somewhere (possibly Anandtech site) that this is the 3rd revision or could even be the fourth.

the Fermi cards don't run nearly as warm as all the review sites made them out to be.. seriously.

91c or 96c was at LOAD on Furmark extreme heat test. it's meant to do that. and the 5870's got 92c on those same tests.

My 480 idles around 44c and loads around 75-80c MAX.. thats not any worse than a 4870 or a GTX 280.. it's a great card and runs very well.

mwave and newegg both have 470's in stock right now. oh and the 470/480 are close to the 5850/5870 but not in tessellation and DX11.. the DX11 games, and other things show a clear win for Nvidia.. and in some RARE cases the 480 matches the 5970. but not often.. but as far as single GPU card. the 480 is king. and I now have one!

Sounds good, though really, the performance gains you get with the 480 are IMHO a "six month" gain, and not the game changer that they were touted to be.

ATI's new cards will be out probably right before christmas, with a 5890 probably this summer to beat the 480.. but wait til nvidia does a respin.

Nvidia's going to respin, and release the full 512SP Fermi card on a much improved 40nm technology or go right to 32nm. Personally Fermi and 32nm will be very hard to beat if they can fit all the transistors onto it.. I think Nvidia threw this out cuz they had to get something out. and the 512SP model will be coming before the year is over. and it will be a beast!

oh and I'm fine with a 6 month gain. I only had my first 260 for a month, then got the second and had those 7 months. I get a new card every 6 months anyways. whatever the next best card is. I'll snag it. I have no problem with that.

calling anything in the PC tech business nothing special because it's only a "six month gain" or only going to be the best for a short while.. that doesn't work. because how fast technology moves. Something better will ALWAYS be coming out in 4-6 months, weather it's faster ram, a better CPU, or the 6 core CPU that just knocked all those i7 people into a new item to crave. or a graphics cards.. it's a never ending cycle. the should I upgrade now, or wait til next release question is a dumb one. there will always be something new coming soon. so get what's best, or what suits you when you need it. and enjoy it.

I'm going to download and try badaboom video encoding tonight. as this 480 is supposed to FLY through encoding!

i didn't wanna add to my already long post, but I agree it wasn't as big of a game changer as people thought it would be.. but when you really look at everything Fermi can do. it's actually very impressive.

it's more than just a GPU. it's a cGPU, its a graphics card, it's a server and workstation card. it does it all. and it's very powerful.. F@H takes advantage of it. and many things like badaboom do also. Wait another 2-3 months and we'll all start seeing the even more things this card can do.

ATI's 5000 series cards has a single tessellation CUDA core, and these fermi cards have like 32. DX11 will be what sets the 470/480 apart from the competition.

Since ati intends on releasing the 6ks on 28nm, there will not be a 6k launch this year. the first cards will be a refresh of the 5k series on 28nm to iron out any bugs on the node.

There isn't going to be a 32nm Full Node, only half node. the next Full node will be 28nm.

Going by the design of the core and how its laid out. I believe that Fermi was never designed for 40nm, and that it was only put onto it to earn nvidia some $$$$$$. until the 28nm process is ready and bugs are ironed out.

Well ATI are planning the 6000 series in early 2011, which can be roughly 18 months from the 5000 release. Nvidia have said their next main thing will be in around 18 months as well, but in the mean time both sides will have their respins.

The GT200s weren't an early Fermi. They were G80s on crack. They still had the full unified shader architecture the G80s had. Though still, if Fermi was in development that long ago, they were still able to release the G80s around the same time, which were a big game changing card.

I know of the spec technicalities. However, nvidia have been quite clear about G200's role in the Fermi development.

Nvidia have said their next main thing will be in around 18 months as well, but in the mean time both sides will have their respins.

the Fermi design at this point really doesn't need more shaders or tmu's, Nvidia could improve just by improving features of the cards and raising clock rates, it'll take 28nm and fixing all the leaks to pull it off though.
