General windows query

I have been using windows 7 for a week now so I have not touched my XP OS. I logged on it today and I noticed that it seemed slower. I know its not really a win7 question but does a OS slow down if you have not used it for awhile? or is it jut me?

Is it on a dual boot with Win7? Did you install Win7 to a second partition?

Since I agree with greg that an OS does not slow down after a period of inactivity, I would have to make the assumption that it is because Win7 is so much better and faster. You probably just got use to the awesome nature of Windows 7, and when you finally returned to XP, you had higher expectations than were realistically possible.

Yes it is in a different partition but I think I'll keep my XP until I am confident that I have all my programs running smoothly with windows 7(atm its not). Maybe it is so that win7 runs faster but is it possible that they both os play around the filesystems differently?

I have 3 partitions

win7
winxp
common_drive

common_drive is where I place all my documents, photos etc. I also have O&O defragger running as a process in my win7 and xp partitions they only defrag the partitions they are installed in and they both defrag common_drive. Is it smarter to only defrag common_drive by one OS or is it ok if both OS do so?

I would uninstall that defragger and install free state-of-the-art Auslogics Disk and Registry defraggers in Windows 7. Then use it's dropdown menu to select which of the 3 partitions to defrag manually.

Ditto with the CCleaner for both its disk and registry cleaners.

These are all the clean/defrag apps you need for Win7 - absolute best, state of the art, leaders of their industry, and free.

Yeah I already have ccleaner but it is yet to be best in windows 7 IMO. I noticed that when I uninstall using it(or any other uninstaller) it doesnt remove the "Notifications area icons" entries. Maybe its a windows 7 fault. One of the many reasons why I am yet to fully migrate to 7.

As for Auslogics defragger I'm going to give it a try and see which one works better since I think this has a more windows 7 support plus its free.

EDIT:
I had a quick look at the settings and it only "auto defrags" during system idle which is not good enough compared to O&O which sits in your system and monitors the filesystem in realtime and defrags files when needs be. For a free software its good and I'll give it a test run and see if there are any performance differences.

Marcus - I have never used CCleaner to delete startup items, just Disk and Reg cleaners manually monthly with Auslogics defrags.

I uninstall programs in CP, delete folder in Program Files, remove Software listings in 2nd/3rd registry keys.

Nothing gets in my startup list (systray) without my knowledge.
