Am sure the problem is with my OS/PC and not ERUNT.exe ... because on my previous PC - win 7 home (64 bit) I used Erunt many many times without this problem. Used previous (old) Erunt-Setup.exe to install, but after got the error I removed Erunt and downloaded new & installed - same error.

Was advised to change User Account Control settings (move slider to bottom - 'never notify') but same error continues.

I vaguely remember that on old system (Home version) there was a problem initially but can't recall details - just know ERUNT worked fine!

What to do?

On Windows 8 I set compatibility mode to run as administrator. I don't remember if I did that on W7.

Hi

ERUNT is heavily outdated and specifically designed for "Windows 2000" although it may work on other NT family OS.
I would recommend "Tweaking.com Registry Backup" which is specifically designed to overcome the shortcomings of ERUNT.

This looks really good. I'm going to try it out.

Thank you Anshad and milesA.

"Tweaking.com Registry Backup" looks good but ...

  • Is it a replacement for ERUNT - recommended by the many tech forums?
  • I've used ERUNT for several years and have never had a problem (til now) so am reluctant to change something that involves a very key component of Windows.
  • How safe is it? (Realizing that 'backing-up' shouldn't modify the registry.)

As a quick experiment I would right click on ERUNT and click Run As Administrator. If that seems to work OK then you may or may not want to try the new registry backup tool. If you did a backup image of your system and a restore point or two then unless it's out and out malware you should be insulated.

Also there's no rule against running MBAM against the new tool before running it. I don't suspect it but a scan of one small folder(if you get the portable zip and unpack it) only takes about 20 seconds in MBAM.

Have tried 'run as admin' several times - no joy

Tried running ERUNT in 'compatibility' mode (in 2000 mode and also in NT mode) - no joy

Also tried the above (both modes) with 'run as admin' turned on - still no joy

Backed up image last week and 'restore point' last Tues with Win Update so will try new Registry backup ... just a little leary because ERUNT has been touted, in several forums, as being trustworthy

Frustrating because ERUNT worked well on PC with Win 7 Home

Use MBAM regularly and don't expect problem with new Registry bkup program - more concerned with what it might do the registry

Hmm I wonder if anyone tried running erdnt as administrator? I'm on W8 and using run as admin with UAC off works to make the ERDNT folders. I suppose the way to find out would be make restore point, run ERUNT, make an obvious change in the registry, run erdnt as admin. If no error see if it changed the registry setting back or removed a dummy key etc..
