Solved Wireless Bluetooth issues on Win 7 Pro 64 bit Lenovo laptop

What a mess. I'm having issues with my wireless bluetooth (machine does have the capability), and I've tried dozens of fixes found both here and in the Microsoft and Lenovo sites. Nothing is working.

The problem started back in June with the Windows update issue. My pc is now finally searching, and finding, updates. What isn't fixed is the wireless bluetooth capability.

Prior to June, I was able to connect wireless devices (headsets, etc.) to the PC. They have since disappeared from the printers and devices window, and no matter what I do, I can't get them back.

Here's what I've tried:
Updating drivers from Lenovo site
Updating software from Windows
Starting/restarting the services
sfc (no integrity violations found)

Errors Received:
bluetooth peripheral device doesn't have a driver (cannot update/search)
device driver software was not successfully installed


In services, the following are marked as automatic but will not start:
bluetooth device monitor
bluetooth media service
bluetooth OBEX service
When I try to start them, I get this error:
Windows could not start the <name> service on Local Computer. Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

Bluetooth Settings are set to allow discovery, however, under COM ports, when I try to remove COM 8 and COM9 (with names associated), it says "The specified service does not exist."

Under network connections, bluetooth network connection shows, but has a red x.

I don't see the generic Windows bluetooth drivers anywhere, and I can't find where to grab them.

I've tried multiple resolutions in the windows help forums, but nothing has worked.

I can live without the headset, but other devices are going to be harder.

Is there any way to fix this without a restore? What am I missing? Does this sound like a driver conflict of some sort?

Hello and welcome NoMoreLenovos mate I can sympathise with you because I use Blu tooth mice wherever I can.

So have you tried going to Notification Area Icons - bottom right taskbar and I keep the Blu tooth on the taskbar and if you click on it it will open a window that asks to Show Blu tooth devices click on that and it will open and show you what is available. When you click on any device it will ask you to do several things including troubleshoot - try that and let us know what is there and what happens.

Thanks for the reply.

Right clicking on the icon takes forever to load the menu. "Show Bluetooth Devices" brings me to the Devices and Printers screen. Nothing shows there.

Ok mate now is the machine a laptop or a desktop as I can only locate a laptop for the machine mentioned in your specs.

Now what I was actually looking for was the site for the machine you are having trouble with and link the driver for Blu tooth which is the obvious place to start. So I need to know the exact model of machine you have there with the Blu tooth problem.

For the time being re updates I would make your settings as in my pic and just don't update anything just now until this problem is sorted.

Sorry I am late to reply. We had a work crisis.

I've installed all of the latest Lenovo drivers. They even sent someone out to replace the card, but the issue is not fixed.

Lenovo now wants to replace the motherboard, but I strongly feel this is a driver issue, especially since it worked before, I have no issues with wireless, and bluetooth dongle devices work.

I think the system is missing the generic windows drivers. I know the Intel ones should replace them, but somehow I think it is a problem between windows and the drivers used. I know that Lenovo does some strange things. I've searched for them, but can't seem to locate them at the Windows site. (They aren't making it easy to narrow down drivers you want!)

Ug. You're right. I didn't even think about the key!

Something else I've noticed in Services:

There are four services listed for bluetooth:
BT Device Monitor
BT Media Service
BT OBEX Service
BT Support Service

All are set to automatic. Only BT Support Service is started.

When I go in to start the others, I get errors:
BT Device Monitor: Windows could not start the Bluetooth Device Monitor service on Local Computer. Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

Same error for Bluetooth Media Service and Bluetooth OBEX Service.

I've uninstalled the Intel drivers and reinstalled... rebooted, etc. Nothing. :/

Now have you got the Blu tooth icon on the taskbar as I keep it there for easy access and if you click it a window usually opens to ask you to Add a device and Show all Blu tooth devices and open settings etc??

Sorry I haven't got my camera data lead here or I would send a pic so go into Notification area and get the Blu tooth to show in the taskbar.

When right clicking on the BT icon, and after a delay, the options to add a device, etc. show.

Add a device: does not find the BT item (item is in discovery mode)

Show BT devices: nothing listed in the window

BT Settings:
Options Tab: "Allow bluetooth devices to find this computer" is checked, as are the alerts and to show the icon in the notification area.

Under the COM Ports, the item I'm trying to Repair shows as "COM8 incoming." When I try to remove it, I get an error saying "The specified service does not exist."

Under the hardware tab: Generic bt adapter and ms bt enumerator appear. Both properties say they are working properly.

And the mystery continues. :/

Now one thing I can suggest is to use this https://www.slimwareutilities.com/slimdrivers.php
Now I use this as a last resort and do not recommend it readily if you do try it it might just come up with a driver for Blu tooth because the Lenovo site is just not listing anything after many attempts to find a driver.

When you download the software please be careful to see what else it wants to download because you can end up with nagware like Slimcleaner etc you only want the Slim Drivers. A good little program to install first on your machine and keep is this https://unchecky.com/ < it unticks all those odd little add ons that come with stuff like Adobe for example Bing toolbar, Askbar (a nasty little one to get rid of) etc

Slim Drivers will run a search for drivers for the machine and then let you know which need to be updated. When you have finished with it - do as I do and uninstall it and even go to the registry and find the entries in there for it and right click on them and Delete. A good uninstaller is this Download Revo Uninstaller Freeware - Free and Full Download - Uninstall software, remove programs, solve uninstall problems it will deal with registry entries but I always check myself anyway.
If the Slim Drivers cannot find one then in all probability there isn't one.

If you are unsure of how to clear registry stuff just ask and I can go through it with you.

Here's an update...

Lenovo sent a tech to replace the system board. The new part was DOA, but the tech did something (shorted something, wired something) to make it boot. (The issue was the power button connection.)

Then he put my old board back in... eek. Problems galore. The machine booted, he left, and when I tried to open programs, nothing happened. After a lot of reboots, I finally got into safe mode and went into msconfig to set things for a clean boot.

Little by little, things began to work, but that darn bluetooth issue persists. I ran the troubleshooting, and it says new hardware might have been installed, but nothing is found.

The issue with BT remains. All BT services remain stopped, including Intel BT, except bthserv.

Oh, and the tech guy wiped my restore points. :/

I have Kaspersky Total Security - it shows clean, but now Google is blocking me saying "Our systems have detected unusual traffic from your computer network." (Edited to add: I think this might be from Comcast fooling around with my modem. I had some issues that they were working on this past week.)

Lenovo is supposed to be sending me discs to try to fix this. I'm not sure they'll help.

I don't know what has happened to my system.

Just an update... I did a system restore, but now am having issues with Windows Update. I'll do a search here and see if I can find a fix. Thanks for trying to help.

Yep mate you will get messages like that from Google I do because they monitor your browsing and any deviation from what they consider normal they send that message it is usually login stuff with me with you could just be all the stuff that has been done with the machine.

I am actually in the UK right now and got the message re odd behaviour and so I just ignore it now.

Look the updates I wouldn't worry too much because in my mind you only need the 7 ones and they have been in disarray for some time now.

I finally got this to work. Hopefully someone else will be saved the hassle of doing a system restore - it wasn't necessary.

System restore did not fix the issue. It turns out, there is a problem with Intel BT Drivers and KB3161608, as well as KB3172605 . I uninstalled both KBs, and guess what... problem fixed.
