Solved Getting a new computer $800-$1000

Sorry but I can't trust those companies because durning shipping, some things may get loose and broken or there may be driver problems.

You are then tied to driving to a physical store and picking one out.
It is guaranteed to work when you get it. Dell ships 1000s of PCs which the customer chooses the innards of.

Don't want a computer that has been shipped.
Picking one up a computer store is no help because it was shipped to the store.
I don't know of any other options except having a friend or a local shop build the computer and when done pick the computer up yourself.

Build it yourself and ship it yourself, better all around plus the learning skills and pleasure is nothing like a OEM store bought p.o.s.

He already said that he could not do that because he is mechanically challenged. He would not even venture to put an SSD into a Dell box. Building a whole system is a whole different story - not easy if you are not inclined to do it.

Well I guess you can call it that:sarc:. But i would rather have it called being overly careful.

It is just a piece of harware. If it breaks, they repair it. On the XPS series, the warrenty is 2 years.

I have bought three computers by mail and never had a problem. They were always packed very good. A company could not afford to pack their computers badly and have them break in transit.

I think you worry too much. I guess there can be cases where things get damaged in transit, but that is very rare - and if it happens, they replace it. If you don't set one foot in front of the other, you never advance.

I am sure that happens, but it is probably not very often. As someone else said, the stores get their computers shipped to them so it is the same thing. -- You could find a repair shop in your area and they could build you a computer with the parts you want. You could pick it up at the store when completed. Only you could drop it then.

Ok for now, I will leave my choice at XPS 8700. I will mark this solved but will still be open to suggestions. I might start a thread for laptop suggestions since I will be replacing my laptop too. But one last question: Is it better to order from dell.com or does it not matter to order from a website like amazon?

At Dell order by phone and ask for the deal of the day. They always give you a small rebate.

If in doubt; i would say go over to google; and do a search for some reviews; etc. on Dells, etc; if you dont think you can build a system on your own. I know it may sound like a long shot due to the possible countless results you will get from searching; still; its worth it i think to at least take a chance on searching and see what comes up.

It already has a $200 discount on the website and I do not feel safe ordering through phone. Also, should i stay with the MCAfee livesafe it comes with or should I use an alternative?

It's academic taking about purpose built systems because you are clearly risk averse and there is nothing wrong with that. Mind you some of the big name brand OEMs don't have a great support record and they will typically use budget components.

Well if i go with a custom pc, i would not have any support other than SF. I have noticed too that they use budget components. The Nvidia GeForce 645 is supposed to have 3D Vision but on the dell website, it says it doesn't.

MCAfee livesafe is worth $80 if you buy it. It is OK, especially on an XPS where resources are plentyful.

1. The Office you get with a system will most likely be a trial if you get one at all.

2. Office 365 is a subscription, Office 2013 has various versions.
