to be honest, IE isnt a very good browser at all. It is probably crashing due to overflow or the page just taking a while to load. You might wanna check out chrome or firefox.

Consider resetting IE and maybe getting rind of as many add-ons as you can.

Hello Cmmtch and welcome to Sevenforums.

   Tip
Here are some tips.
  • Look for updates on Windows Update for IE.
  • Do no use the x64-bit version of IE. The engine is old.
  • Make sure all extensions are up-to-date (Flash.. Java.. Shockwaves).
  • Update your video driver (this has been a problem on IE on some systems).
  • Secure that unwanted services ain't running in the background.
  • Scan your computer for Malware.
  • Consider changing to another browser (As mentioned.. Chrome .. Firefox .. Opera)
  • Use CCleaner on IE.

Thanks to everybody for your replies.

oiturtlez, regardless of opinions about IE, it has worked for me for many years. I do have Firefox installed and use it sometimes. Pages load very fast with either IE or FF, there is no problem with pages loading.

UsernameIssues, I will consider reseting IE, thanks for showing me exactly where that can be done from. Right now I have Adobe, Avast!, Checkpoint (Zone Alarm Pro), and Java showing under "toolbars and extensions" no other add ons are enabled/running.

FredeGail, I will check for updates again, I did that this morning and first update was an updated updater. I have been using the x64 IE since that is what my computer is, I didn't realize the x64 could be a problem. Will I notice any difference using the x32 IE instead of the x64?

Do I understand you correctly. You have Avast and Zone Alarm both on your computer now? What ever browsers you choose is fine with me, they all should work as they were designed to.

Layback Bear, I have both Avast! free edition AV and Zone Alarm Pro (firewall only) running. Those have been running well together since the ZA problem was fixed last fall, there was a problem with ZA which was fixed in their update.

I agree with you, the browser you're using shouldn't make any difference, as I'm typing this I got the pop up error message again. This time I'm using the 32 bit IE and I got the error message, x64 and x32 both have the problem. I haven't closed the pop up window yet and I can still type and post this message. I have all updates according to windows update.

Your choice of protection is strange but it's your computer. For testing could you remove both of them and install MSE and use Windows built in Firewall. You could always install them again if you desire.
FredeGail post #4 has some very good links I suggest reading.
This is a great little program for checking if things like Flash ect are updated.
FileHippo.com Update Checker - FileHippo.com
I would also suggest making sure I.E. is set as your default browser and then change it's settings to default. Removing all those little add you can always customize it later to your liking one add on at a time looking for a problem one. I.E.9 is the newest and I recommend using it.

FredeGail, no offense taken, I'm thankful to get some help. I feel like most problems users encounter with IE are not the browsers fault. Thank you for taking the time to post a response to help me. I thought I had something when event viewer showed Avast! WebRep with the application error when IE stopped working. I turned it off and was typing a response to this topic when it happened again so that wasn't it.

Layback Bear, why would ZAP and Avast! AV be considered strange? One is an AV and the other is a firewall. I have had a paid version of the Zone Alarm firewall for 10 years, it has served me well. It isn't an Anti Virus so that's why I have Avast! free version. I guess I could use the Windows MSE and firewall, it (the firewall) may be improved but years ago Zone Alarm was the only firewall that monitored outgoing as well as incoming.

I will update as I try things.

Bummer. Are you using IE8 or IE9. Back in March, you were having issues with IE8 (assuming that the March post and this post is dealing with the same computer).

FredeGail suggested this earlier (via a different link)
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html
It does not take long to run and it will let us know if the problem is deeper than just IE.

Yes, it is the same computer, using IE9 for a couple of months now. Downloaded FileHippo Update checker, Adobe AIR needed updating (also CPU Z and Speccy) did those updates. I haven't done the reset IE yet, still trying some things before I do that.

I will run the SCANNOW and report results, I haven't had Yahoo mail open and since I've had browser(s) open again nothing has happened. We'll see if that's a cause, anyway running scannow and then have to start BBQ pretty soon, it's 4:02 pm.

The advice that I've seen on this forum is to run the scannow option three times - or until it gives a clean bill of health.

sfc /scannow found problems and fixed them. I will close browsers, reboot, and reply back with results. It might be a little while if there isn't any pop up message just to be sure it is actually fixed.

Thanks to everyone that replied, you all get some rep :D

Maybe you can open a website like cnn.com (which automatically refreshes) then open another tab and visit Yahoo's e-mail... and a few other tabs to sites that you frequent and let it all stay open while you enjoy BBQ :-)

Thoroughly enjoyed the BBQ, and some cold Budweisers too :D

Came back to the pc which I had opened 6 tabs including Yahoo mail, had three pop ups with the error message.

I uninstalled Avast! (remembered this morning there was a program update in addition to the definition update) installed MSE. There was another windows update, installed that. Now I'm in a testing mode, have 5 tabs open including mail and will see what happens, I'm thinking Avast! is the root cause, event viewer always shows Avast! WebRep as part of the error. We will see what goes.

Happy 4th of July to all in the US

The reason is going by memory is that Zone Alarm a while back didn't get along with Windows 7 and Avast still causes problems with Windows 7.
MSE and the built in firewall and the operating system have the same daddy Microsoft and play well together.
