(Resolved) Getting rid of hovering window preview?

Y'know that preview that appears when you hover your mouse over an icon in your task bar?

I'd like it to go away.

Turning off Aero doesnt do it, so if some one knows how to do it, please let me know. I HATE that preview window!!!

===============================================================

This issue has been resolved!! In case you dont want to read the entire thread, here's what happened to me and how I finally fixed it. Hopefully it will help you!

I tried to up the delay time in the regedit, and it didnt work so I went and tried a couple other things. Well, apparently upping the time and adding code that would supposedly stop the taskbar preview thumbnail from showing up entirely were nulling each other out so the the thumbnail was still coming up.

Here is my fix:

**FIRST THING! Save any and all work, tell any friends you're chatting to that you will be back in about 5 minutes. Its important!**

1. Start>type in regedit.

2. Open the Registry Editor

3. Go to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER>Software>Microsoft>Windows>Current Version>Policies>Explorer

4. Check and make sure you do NOT have TaskbarNoThumbnail. If you DO, delete it. If you dont, good.

5. Back out of the Polices tab and go up to Explorer (its the 5th down in Current Version), then click on Advanced.

6. Check and see if you have ExtendedUIHoverTime. If you dont, go on to step #7. If you do, DELETE IT!

7. Right click in a blank space in the right window and hit New>DWORD (32-bit) Value.

8. For the new value title, type in ExtendedUIHoverTime.

9. Double click this value to modify it.

10. Check the Decimal option on the right, and then type in a value data of about 10,000 (no comma). This will put the delay time at 10 seconds. If you want it higher, make it higher. I have mine at 20.

11. Hit Okay and close the Registry Editor.

12. IMMEDIATELY log off and log back on! If you wait, it probably wont take effect - this is what I did the first time around and it didnt work the first go around. When I logged off and logged back in right away, it worked.

Good luck!

Many thanks again to R A who gave me this suggestion.

If it worked for you, give us both (R A especially) a lil rep.

Hi Welcome to SF ,

You can try these steps

1. Right-click on the Taskbar. Select properties.

2. Click on the Start Menu tab and uncheck "Store and display recently opened items in the Start menu and the taskbar".

3. Click Ok and now the jump list will not be visible.

Hope that helps

I think that option might be in "Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Performance Information and Tools"->"Adjust visual effects" menu.

......That has nothing to do with the problem I am having. That deals with the start menu, not the taskbar.

I know my way around computers very well, but I have no clue what you're talking about - that doesnt exist in my control panel at all, even in category view.

Type advanced system into the start menu and in the dialog box that appears look for an entry for visual settings. There might be something there.

Can you choose the checkbox, adjust for best performance, and then reboot? It will switch to a classic mode look-a-like.

In the dialog box you'll see three options - choose the option that is for best performance or untick every box and reboot. Are you still in advanced system properties?

No, I'm not. When I couldnt find anything associated (as far as I could tell) with the preview window, I closed it.

I'm just going to stick with the suggestion of upping the delay time between the hover and it showing up, thanks.

It would be interesting to see if that would do it . . . but if you are satisfied mark this thread as solved via the exclamation mark.

You can use the Group policy Editor to turn off the taskbar previews.

Start > gpedit.msc
Left pane, click User Configuration
Right pane, Administrative Templates
Right pane, Start Menu and taskbar
At the bottom double click Turn off taskbar thumbnails
Set to enabled, apply, ok, reboot.

Doing it through the Group Policy Editor doesn't work, that was only for Vista.

Have you tried to right the Registry Editor and Run as Admin and then perform the tweak?

Also, I think you need to log off or do a reboot for the edit to take effect.

Know I gotta reboot, did so. Didnt do anything.

If you're talking about the suggestion you offered on the first page, yes. I did that. Keeps switching back to hexidecimal and wont stay on decimal no matter how many times I go in and hit "okay", then log off and log on.

Nothing is sticking.
