Getting Rid of Internet Explorer in Win 7

Now that Microsoft Edge is officially released, how does one get rid of Internet Explorer in a Win 7-Pro installation? Are there any reasons for keeping IE?

What do you mean get rid of? Parts of it are necessary for the OS. You could possibly remove some of the stuff in program files, but it is only a few mb.

Internet Explorer is not easily removed and doing do is strongly discouraged.

IE is not just a browser but is essentially a part of the OS. You may not be using IE but there are parts of Windows that use IE components. There are Microsoft and third party applications that use IE components or the browser itself. IE was designed for this. The way this is done can be far from obvious and is rarely documented.

Microsoft discourages using IE in Windows 10. But it is still there and I expect will be for a long time.

Two things one does not do: tug on Superman's cape and "adjust" MS Internet Explorer. Leave it be, use Edge and enjoy! 1/23 note: later posters' ideas are aok! I was referring to any attempt to uninstall or "de-register" IE.

If you delete any shortcuts to IE on your computer, you won't even know it's there.

If you go to Programs and Features => Turn Windows Features On or Off , just uncheck the checkbox "Internet Explorer 11", it will remove itself the necessary files to get rid of it (partially).

As I look at various browser add-ons, they cite IE and Firefox and Chrome and sometimes Opera but I never see Edge. Dunno if therefore Edge may not be supported by your favorite add-on, but only to say that I have found it useful to keep IE11 around if only for compatibility and testing.

Edge has collection of add-ons (extensions) that can be found in the Microsoft Store.
