Getting sound through DVI - HDMI

Morning all,

Right i picked up a pc that needed some tlc, tried installing windows 8 and get the error so installed windows 7.

Quick breakdown:

motherboard - k7s41
cpu - amd seprom 2400+
graphics card - powercolor x1950 pro agp 256mb

Had a few problems installing the video card - but after going into bios and changing agp to 4x instead of 8x it now works great - full hd display using a dvi - hdmi 1.4v lead

Now my problem is I cant get any sound, having read and read i now know there is sound output through DVI (19 pins video / 5 pins sound)

My question is how do i enable the sound through my x1950 pro

I have tried installing the realtek hd audio drivers but it just comes back no driver installed.

tried upgrading ccc to latest version still no help.

I have tried the phone jack at the back into stereo jack in tv but no sound (does the hdmi have to be into port 1 on tv or should that not matter)

Or am i just wasting my time and it is impossible to get the sound through my hdmi.

Any help would be greatfully appreciated.

Is your Windows 7 32 or 64bit?
Your system seems to be very old. The motherboard seems to date from 2004. It looks to have been designed with Windows 98 or 2000 in mind so the chances of running Win 7 in any meaningful way is not really an option IMHO!

I always thought DVI only carried the video signal.
It seems that is wrong, and SOME video cards can also pass the audio.
Does DVI carry audio signals as well as video? - PC & Desktop Computers

Your x1950 GPU may not have this capability.

Can you connect your speakers (TV) using the standard 3.5mm (1/8") audio jack on the PC?
If it can, that should be your easiest way to get sound.

Yep it is an old system, picked this up so I had a backup, as I have put windows 8 enterprise on my laptop.

As for the old system, windows 7 ultimate 32 bit runs great, no problems, I have to update the bios on the k7s41 and then I'll be able to install windows 8, not used floppies in along time, tried the USB boot but the old bios doesn't allow Dow boot from USB.

I have plugged the phone jack in and had to insert the Hdmi into port one of tv and that has brought sound.

Just sounds very tinny, high def pic with crappy sound.

From what I have read it was the ati 2xxx cards but some think the 1950 is supported as well but no options in catalyst.

I'm just wondering if anyone is aware of any custom firmware for the x1950 to enable the sound options, as it seems the x1950 was a popular card in its day.

One question - the card has 2 dvi outputs and a video out, could it be something to do with using both dvi ports with a y splitter, or even a dvi to Hdmi converter and run phones to that from the video out.

Did you go into Control Panel > Sound > Playback and set the correct device. I believe by default it will go to your soundcard/speakers. It does on my system. My Video card has DVI and HDMI out. My monitor has speakers in it and a DVI input but the only way I can get sound on it is to use the analog audio in and connect it to my sound card. All the DVI audio devices listed under Sound Playback are grayed out and listed as unplugged. That Makes me think my monitor can't use the sound part of the DVI signal. It doesn't have the digital decoder required.

No sound through DVI. That is just video signal. With HDMI you can pass sound through it if you have the right cable, some HDMI cables don't do sound, and your MB supports pumping sound through the video card HDMI port. Your MB may not as it is old.

" No sound through DVI." You know, that's what I thought but I didn't have time to go look it up when I posted. Wikipedia says no, which is what I thought. You need HDMI for that. That will tech me for not researching it more before I post. A second look in Control panel shows what I thought was DVI are actually HDMI devices.

In your OP when you said phone jack i thought you were somehow trying to connect from a modem telephone jack.
I now realize you mean the standard 3.5mm audio jack!

It looks like the k7s41 is an ASRock motherboard, right?
The only drivers i see for this MB are for XP.
ASRock > K7S41

In Device Manager what do you see for audio device(s) (Sound, video and game controllers)?
Are there any errors in Device Manager?

In control panel i have the usual ac97 and a unknown game adaptor, now im assuming that the unknown gaming adaptor is the sound section of my card now that the realtek hd drivers are installed. the drivers for the (tried messing with drivers for the gameport but it just says windows has assigned the correct drivers)

As for those saying no sound - lots to learn young yedis.

The DVI does produce sound, but you have to buy the ATI DVI to HDMI adaptor to unleash and these are expensive, im going the cheap route as this is simply a backup pc and simply bought the dvi - hdmi v1.4.

Managed to improve the sound somewhat with the 3d sound drivers, but this is what im thinking -

The dvi on my card are DL-DVI x 2 (DVI dual link) and not the usual dvi-d

Now notice how the dvi-d has additional pins but not on the left, mine has the dvi-i setup

At the min im learning the difference

Right got to the bottom of it, as my cards dvi are dvi-i this cannot transmit sound over hdmi due to the signal being a mixture of analogue and digital signals being transmitted, the hdmi controllers of the tv cannot distinguish the audio signals.

2 options if i wanted to get sound through my hdmi - buy a card with either hdmi or dvi-d outputs as these would just ransmit the digital signal or buy a dvi-i to hdmi convertor with audio input, which converts all signal into digital.

DVI-A is analog video only, DVI-D is digital video only, and DVI-I is integrated (digital and analog Video). Dual link is used to support large displays with high resolutions. There is no audio signal on a DVI connector. You can convert it to HDMI but it still won't have any audio on it. You need a video card with an HDMI output. Or feed the audio output from your sound card to the audio in on the back of the monitor or TV. The sound driver for the HDMI on the Video card is installed with the Video card drivers. It will be ATI/AMD or Nvidia, not Realtek. Realtek would be for your motherboards onboard sound card.

Ok if the card has a HDMI port on it why are you doing the DVI to HDMI. Sorry that just doesn't make any sense. Use the HDMI port.

Could you provide a link to this information? Does your card do this? Is it a special ATI DVI to HDMI converter that's used. I've looked at the DVI specs and pin out and see no mention of sound, only Video?

Actually, on the ati cards that support audio on the dvi port, you don't need the dongle if you have a dvi to hdmi cable. All the dongle is doing is giving you an hdmi port.
My old hd3650 had 2 dvi ports, white and yellow. The yellow port had the audio pins and I just used a dvi to hdmi cable on the yellow port to run to my HDTV for video and sound.

Look at the pinout on the dvi port you are trying to use and look at the pinout on the DVI to HDMI cable you are using. Do they both support video AND AUDIO ?

As I said above, no it doesn't. No ATI/AMD card before the HD 2xxx series has audio. I used to have (and still do in my kids computer), and it has zero audio capabilities.
