Hello deirdremeldrum, welcome to sevenforums.

Sorry but I can't understand how you can't download the file? I just tried it and it works fine here.

And not that it should matter, but are you using anything other than IE (internet Explorer)?

VueScan does and should work. If VueScan isn't even working, there's a problem with either Windows, or more that likely, the scanner.

In fact, I sometimes tell people to try VueScan when they're having problems to see if the scanner is working as a sort of troubleshooting technique. See my post here http://www.sevenforums.com/drivers/44994-getting-your-nikon-coolscan-work-w7-x64-45.html#post2250794

You might check your cables or connections. You might also need to make sure the scanner has the latest firmware; if not, that could also cause problems because the drivers you downloaded from Nikon's site (you did do that right) requires the latest scanner firmware as stated in the warning in the instructions.

I need you to answer me - Does Vuescan work? Yes or no.

And as I said, if you can not get vuescan to work, there is a problem beyond these instructions.

That said, does Vuescan work. And do you have access to an XP machine?

Help me help you.

Vuescan will work with my Epson Artisan 810, but does not recognize the Nikon 5000 ED. So, if Epson is off, Nikon on and I try to start Vuescan it says no device detected.

I do not have access to an XP machhine

Vuescan will work with my Epson Artisan 810, but does not recognize the Nikon 5000 ED. So, if Epson is off, Nikon on and I try to start Vuescan it says no device detected.

Well if Vuescan isn't working the issue is elsewhere, more than likely the scanner. I know Vuescan works under Windows 7 x64 because I was using it with my Nikon 4000.

As you may have discovered Vuescan is a 40/80 dollar program, whereas the native software for the scanner is free; thus the instructions to get it working. However Vuescan does work, and it is constantly updated all the time. Speaking of which, have you tried the latest version?

That said, since Vuescan isn't recognizing the scanner, you have bigger issues; and there's nothing these instructions can do until you get whatever issue is preventing the scanner from working even with Vuescan.

- Does the scanner have the latest firmware update? Unfortunately the only way to tell is to get the firmware version from the Nikon Scan Software. Again, my warning...

:warn: Warning: Scanners must have the latest Nikon firmware installed for these procedures to work. Currently the only OS capable of updating the scanner’s firmware is Windows XP or Mac OS 10.2.x - 10.4.11. This means you cannot update the firmware without access to either of these OS’s! Also note that even Vuescan may not work under Windows 7 if the latest firmware isn’t installed. In short, if your scanner isn’t working when trying these or Vuescan, check your check the firmware
See this post - http://www.sevenforums.com/drivers/44994-getting-your-nikon-coolscan-work-w7-x64-45.html#post2252892

- Remind me again, is this a USB or FireWire connection?
- And are you sure the connection/cable is in working order?
- Do you have access to another machine to test the scanner?
- Are you using the stand-alone USB/FireWire card? If so, is it working?
- Have you tried switching ports? Perhaps the one you're using for the scanner is dead or problematic?

These are just a few suggestions to look into especially firmware issue.

Bottom line is these instructions will not help you if you can not at least get it to work with Vuescan. Sorry :(

Dear sygnus21,

First of all, thank you for this topic! (and for continuing to help people here!) With the help of this topic I have been able to get about 10 different Nikon Coolscan scanners to work on almost twice as much Windows 7 machines (both USB and Firewire).
The few times the scanners didn't work at the first try was because I didn't follow your instructions as closely as I thought I had. This topic has been an immense help!

(In case you are wondering why I have a need for that much scanners: the company I work for provides a stress-free work environment for people who can't function in a normal work place due to mental health issues and/or autism, we are located in the Netherlands. Thanks in part to the fact that Nikons scanning software is very easy to use we are able to teach our clients to scan slides and negatives).

I have recently been running into some problems that I can't seem te fix:
On a couple of my scanners we are getting an error message saying: "There was an error performing a scan."
After this message we can continue to scan (we do have to re-scan the last slide, with the error message popping back up every few scans).

I believe this is a software/driver issue. When installing the scanner that gave the issue on a new pc the issue is gone. I've tried to fix the problem by removing the drivers, but I can't get Windows to completely remove the drivers. When reconnecting the scanner Windows recognises it and the error message will pop up again when scanning.
So far I've been able to fix it by reinstalling Windows 7, but I am hoping there is an easier fix to do a fresh driver installation. (Scanning with VueScan doesn't seem to produce the error, but Nikon Scan suits us a lot better than VueScan).

Hi scanwinkel,

First and foremost I thank you for the kind words, and am happy to hear this fix provides a good working environment for your situation.

I'm not exactly sure what's going on with that error message, though I vaguely remember seeing it even under XP, where the scanner was very much supported.

Anyway the only suggestions here are to make sure the cables or connections are good; and check the firmware to see if the scanner(s) have the latest version installed. The scan software should be able to tell you the firmware version. Be aware though that in order to update the firmware, you'll need a Windows XP machine.

As for uninstalling the software - it should uninstall correctly using add/remove feature under Programs and Features. However, because we installed the scanners.inf file manually, the file will need to be uninstalled manually by simply deleting the folder you put the file in.

There should be no need reinstall the OS. Personally there should be no need to uninstall/reinstall the software either. Again, you might check the scanner and it's connections/cables.

Let me know if you need further assistance.

I now believe I was too fast in drawing the conclusiong that it is a driver issue (the problem reoccured on a newly installed system). I will try to see if I can work out where the problem lies (maybe the firmware). I'll let you know when I find something.
