Vuescan will work with my Epson Artisan 810, but does not recognize the Nikon 5000 ED. So, if Epson is off, Nikon on and I try to start Vuescan it says no device detected.
Well if Vuescan isn't working the issue is elsewhere, more than likely the scanner. I know Vuescan works under Windows 7 x64 because I was using it with my Nikon 4000.
As you may have discovered Vuescan is a 40/80 dollar program, whereas the native software for the scanner is free; thus the instructions to get it working. However Vuescan does work, and it is constantly updated all the time. Speaking of which, have you tried the latest version?
That said, since Vuescan isn't recognizing the scanner, you have bigger issues; and there's nothing these instructions can do until you get whatever issue is preventing the scanner from working even with Vuescan.
- Does the scanner have the latest firmware update? Unfortunately the only way to tell is to get the firmware version from the Nikon Scan Software. Again, my warning...
:warn:
Warning:
Scanners must have the latest Nikon firmware installed for these procedures to work. Currently the only OS capable of updating the scanner’s firmware is Windows XP or Mac OS 10.2.x - 10.4.11. This means you cannot update the firmware without access to either of these OS’s! Also note that even Vuescan may not work under Windows 7 if the latest firmware isn’t installed. In short, if your scanner isn’t working when trying these or Vuescan, check your check the firmware

- Remind me again, is this a USB or FireWire connection?
- And are you sure the connection/cable is in working order?
- Do you have access to another machine to test the scanner?
- Are you using the stand-alone USB/FireWire card? If so, is it working?
- Have you tried switching ports? Perhaps the one you're using for the scanner is dead or problematic?
These are just a few suggestions to look into especially firmware issue.
Bottom line is these instructions will not help you if you can not at least get it to work with Vuescan. Sorry
