Getting your Nikon coolscan to work on W8 x64

I have tried the solution of sygnus21 on Vista x64 with a coolscan 5000 ED.
It is very clear and works perfectly.

Now, I would like to do the same on Windows 8 x64.
I have made exactly the same procedure,
but, at last minute, when I try do make the system look up for the driver (NKSscnUSD.dll and scanners.inf files) in the folder, I obtain this error message due to Windows 8

The file INF of third party does not contain any informations on digital certificate.
Refer to the manufacturer. etc ... "

If anybody had a solution for this new problem that seems entirely created by new Windows safety mecanisms (are they really usefull?), I thank him in advance.

Any ideas?

I have not tried Windows 8, and thus can not say if these procedures work or not. It wouldn't surprise me if they didn't so...

That said, it may come to a point where you may have to look towards Vuescan
to get that scanner working under 8. Unfortunately Vuescan is a paid program, and I can't say it supports 8 yet. However there is a 30 day trial period, so you can give it a try and go from there.

If you do manage to get my procedures working under Windows 8, let me know what it took so I may have those for others to use.

Nikon coolscan and W8 next

The solution of Vuescan is not right for me. It's expensive and I even don't know if the slide feeder is properly managed.
I have bought a new desktop on W8 only because my old desktop on XP has became too slow (uniquely due to OS updates, increasing load generated by anti-virus, ... - it even became unable to send mail from Outlook, probably due its slowness !!!)
But I am not interested in W8, not at all, and I find quite abnormal the fact that I have to replace all my soft as a consequence of this change : photoshop, office XP, and so on. The bill becomes quite high, more high than the desktop price ! And nevertheless, Nikon View will never work again.
Sometimes I look at Linux advantages ...

So, I would be interested in a light solution using old componants of Nikon Scan, as your solution on W7.
It seems that the aim is very near :
At this level of the OS (USB and device drivers) there must not be very heavy différences between W8 and W7 or even Vista;
the driver is not rejected by the OS; the lock is only about the check of the digital signature : the instructions of the scanners.inf file seems unproper as regarding to the signature issues.

Is there a mean to avoid this check or to make it works properly ?
Looking at other *.inf files on the desktop to try to understand the syntax, I have noticed that the line of instruction signature is usually "$WINDOWS NT$" instead of "$Chicago$" (in printer driver from HP, or others). I tried this modification : the error message is exactly the same as previously with your scanners.inf.
The signature check would have to be de-activated for this driver, as you can do four your own macro in Excel. Or is it possible to add the proper digital signature to the driver NKScnUSD.dll ?

You do not have to change all your software to upgrade to Windows 8; you may have to do a couple of updates, and driver updates, but for the most part your current software should work under 8.

With regards to the scanner, we had to find a hack to get the scanner to work under Windows 7, so it's no surprise here that Windows 8 won't work with the scanner. That is a decision long ago made by Nikon, so they are the ones to blame.

With regards to Vuescan, I would at least try the 30 day trial program to see if the scanner works; this way you have an option available should you chose to use it in the future.

As for a light solution, I have non as I'm not a programmer nor did I create the inf file used here. All I did was add a scanner to it, but that's the scope of my experience; thus I'm unable to provide a light solution.

On the Microsoft Community forum, in French, I have found a case similar of unsigned driver rejected by the installation procedure. See

It is a driver for a Wifi card, and the provider didn't supply a signed driver.
A solution seems to have been found to sign this driver and is exposed in this tutorial :

unfortunately in bad french.

This procedure has succesfully solved the problem on W7.
It uses the SDK2.0 x86 (and I found it).
It is not exactly light, but seems affordable, if you are used with this kinds of Tools.
A "guru" of this forum says that the procedure is riskless.
In fact, you only create your own certificate and sign a copy of the driver file with it. Then you apply the usual installation procedure. I suppose that it works only on your computer, but it is sufficient.

Do you think that it will works on W8 with the same version of the tool (I did not find a later version) ?
In your last answer, you mentionned a hack which was necessary for W7. Was it this kind of modification?

Again, I'm not a programmer or hacker and thus this is an area out of my realm of experience. In short, I am unable to provide the answers you seek. You'll have to look elsewhere.

I suggest you create your own forum post for such questions as this isn't the thread for it.

Bottom line, I can't say if this fix works on Windows 8 or not because I don't have Windows 8. I can only vouch for 7.

1. Mouse over the lower-left (edit:I think that should be the lower-right) corner, then select Settings.

2. Select Change PC Settings.

3. Choose General.

4. Scroll to the bottom and select Restart now under the Advanced startup area.

5. Select Troubleshoot.

6. Select Advanced Options.

7. Select Startup Options.

8. Select Restart.

Now Device Driver Signing should be disabled, allowing you to install any driver you like in Windows 8 until you reboot.

I also want to get my Coolscan scanner working with Windows 8 and have yet to attempt it. However, getting my wife's computer upgraded from Win7 to Win 8 is just about finished and it has been pretty easy. I like Win8!

Thanks a lot for this is information. I tried the procedure soon.

On my computer [language in french], "Mouse over the lower-left or lower-right corner", allows to select Settings (in fact the config Panel) but then the successive menus don't allow to find the miraculous Restart or Advanced options.
Perhaps have you taken W 7 and not W 8 as a reference (though the technipages.com article is given for W 8)?


Nevertheless, I find this miraculous button by using Search for Settings (on the new welcome tiled start page) with the keyword "Start": it identifies an application named "Options de Démarrage avancées" [ie Advanced Start Options]. Conversely, if you search by "Démarr..." you will not found anything of interest ! Easy, isn't it, for poor french people? Then the serie of menus is similar but not exactly the same as described ...
It appears that at this level of details, English and French versions show clear differences. (?!)

The first time I have gone through all this procedure, the computer didn't restart at all (!).
I tried twice more: the computer restarted and at the beginning of the start, asked which start-option you want to choose; to deactivate Device Driver Signing, you have to type the choice 8.

I have made several tests with different versions of files .dll, .inf, and .cat for catalogue.
Endeed, the signature itself is no longer required, but, nevertheless some checks associated with signing remain required:
you must produce a .cat file and the .inf file must refer to it by a "catalog=" instruction in the [Version] section (and this .cat file has to be produced with a Tool of the new WDK serie to sign the drivers, Inf2Cat ; the old SDK is no longer sufficient: this routine does not yet exist in it).

And then, in the particular case of my scanner (Nikon LS-5000-ED) you cannot install the drivers of the solution (.inf and .dll) proposed by Steel Chn as they are : with or without check of driver signing, the error message is the same:
'[Translated from French]: An Error was encountered when adding the driver to the magasin'
Of course no n° of error is given, and what is exactly this magasin? (certificates, services, registers, ...?).

So, it is an information for you : if you try to install the driver of a (or this particular?) Nikon scanner on W 8, you will probably encounter some difficulty independently of the driver signing checks. But we don't know if it's due to a fundamental incompatibility, or only due to more severe checks in W 8.
Perhaps we should have some more ideas to ask to Steel Chn? He indicates recently on his thread (nov 12) that he has made successfull tests on W 8 (but I dont know the model of scanner; and he had necessarly to modify its .inf file).

Some say it works (Dylan Lysoway, Steel Chn before the nov,14) on W8, and others says not (among them Steel Chn, the nov,15, but il let hear us that it is in a first step).

I haven't gone through all the pages, but has anyone tried Vuescan by Hamrick. Lists the CoolScan as supported. Works with many other older, and newer, scanners.

The Purpose

If you at least read the first page you'd see that this thread is solely about getting the Nikon Software to work under Windows 7 without the use of Vuescan

That said, I've already advised those running Windows 8 to try the latest trial version of Vuescan to see if it works under Windows 8. At least until I can definitively determine if the Nikon Software will, or will not work under Windows 8.

Yes, I'm using the 32-bit Vista Nikon Scan v4.0.3 software with 64-bit Windows 8. I just followed the steps from message #1 in this thread, posted by sygnus21. When I got to the last step in his instructions (step #9), where the driver is actually installed, I got the error telling me the driver wasn't signed. At that point, I followed your instructions on how to temporarily disable the requirement that drivers be signed. Then I tried sygnus21's step #9 again, and was able to install the driver successfully.

I haven't tried using Vuescan although I may, just to see how it compares.

My Nikon LS-5000 with Slide Feeder works also properly on W8 64 in applying justlucky and jvahsholtz procedure to start without signature checks. ! I used the driver, as modified according to sygnus 21 indications (modified scanners.inf from Viescan modified by Steel Chn and others and original Nikon NKScnUSD.dll from version 4.0.3 of Nikon scan).
And furthermore, when you reboot, even without this desactivation, it still works (it seems that, once installed, the driver needs no more signature checks to be runned; in fact, you can find permanent modifications in the registry).

Great thanks to all the contributors. My previous unsuccesfull try was probably due to a wrong choice in the restart option (I have no other explaination).

In my package of NikonSan (and an other Nikon package with a coolpix camera) I had "NikonView" which 'almost' works on W8 : in this Nikon browser, the thumbnails of your pictures no longer appears ... (?); you have to perform a manual search every time you change the directory. It is not very convenient !
You can dowload from the Nikon site NikonViewNx which is free and offers the same functions (and more) and works properly. From NikonViewNx, you even are able to make a call to an external program such 'PanoramaMaker', a very usefull tool offered in previous Nikon packages (as the name shows it, it allows to make all kinds of panoramas with several pictures).

As far as the driver signature solution (no longer usefull) is concerned, I found in the Microsoft documentation that, in W8, you probably have to use some more options in building your test certificate (at least, two). Some of the necessary informations in the Microsoft documentation is spread in numerous pages of instructions; you have never a precise, clear and full view of what you need ... Error messages never explicit ...

What a lost of time due to both Microsoft and Nikon, united 'against' their customers!
