Hi Sygnus, Hi Bellsprings ... if it's packed in a box, or just about to throw it out ... I might be interested in buying one of them, provided they're in 'Like New' full working conditions. I have a mint 4000ED, but fear it will fail sometime ahead as any machine does. I might need a replacement unit ... yes, I still shoot film - and will stick to w7 Ultimate, or even downgrade to XP, just because of film and the Coolscan. If either of you think I'm old fashioned, or whatever, you're both right !
First off, as long as I have still have my negatives andslides I plan on keeping my scanner so thanks but I'm keeping it
Secondly, I would HIGHLY urge you not to move back to XP asthe OS isn't even supported by Microsoft anymore and this could lead to allsorts of security holes not being fixed or supported.
What you could do is move to Windows 8 and give
Vuescan a try.
When I posted these instructions years ago it was to help get Nikon's free scanning utility to work under Windows 7. My attitude is and will always be that if the free software works under the current OS, why buy a software program for it?
Unfortunately Nikon, and probably some other scanner manufacturers no longer support older scanners people want to hold on to like the Nikon Coolscans. For us we have to hope there are people out there who can find a way to get the scanner's free software working.
For me, I'm no longer in that fight as I simply don't use my scanner anymore; but if I did, I'd look to the internet like you guys did to find me and my instructions. And I thank all those who thanked me for helping them, and continue to help.
With that, I'll say this... for those of you who still have Nikon Scanners and still want to hold on to them, you might give
Vuescan a try. Forty(39.99) dollars for standard with no upgrades after 1 year, ninety bucks ($89.99) for the pro which gives lifetime upgrades.
I've had a copy of Vuescan since 2004, but always preferred to use the Nikon software instead as I preferred ICE (their noise algorithm) compared to Vuescan's solution. However I can't tell you how Vuescan performs now as I've not physically used it since around 2007, but I do know they state it now supports
Windows 8.1. and the most popular Nikon Scanners. And you can always try the trial version first.
Now I'm not here to endorse Vuescan, and think Microsoft is being ridiculous (to put it mildly) in not supporting these expensive scanners at least up to Windows 7 x64, but they didn't, and rather than throwing them away if they still work, it may be more beneficial to purchase a copy of Vuescan. At least you now have a working scanner under the latest operating system. Unfortunately Hamrick (makers of Vuescan) understands this all too well.
Lastly don't be so desperate to just download any file purporting to be able to get your scanner working. You could get more then you bargained for.
Peace
