After reading through your entire thread up to message #261, I can appreciate your effort to retire from such a troublesome topic. In that message you made a comment that stopped me cold.
What comment??? Please link.
I have been struggling with my Super Cool Scan 4000 ED like so many others. However, I was successful in gaining full control in my Win 7 Ultimate 64 using the instructions from Steel Chn. I had only used the scanner a few times (THROUGH PS cs 5) when a relatively new Drobo HD failed and caused much grief.
In the process of trying to regain control of the Drobo, I had tried to restore my system to an earlier date and it FAILED. Supposedly the registry was left where I started, but I no longer could use my scanner and had to reinstall a few other major programs. (It was obvious my registry had become corrupted to some extent.) Similarly, I tried to redo the Nikon software install with the same .inf file from Steel Chn. Although the scanner showed up in the device manager, I could not use Nikon Scan. To make a long story shorter, the Scan program would load with the error that it couldn't access the source, which I later "learned" was the lack of the Twain drivers. Adobe had stopped including the twain drivers in cs5, but I DLd them and put them in the proper folder.
I'm sorry but you have me completely lost here. You mention registry, which my instructions doesn't require any registry tweaks, hacks, or otherwise so I'm confused as to why you mention registry. You also keep mentioning Steel Chn's inf file, which shouldn't need to be used since you have a Nikon Coolscan 4000 and my inf file should work for it.
And yes... there is NO twain support, but that's from Nikon, NOT adobe.
Thus I went on a search for clues as to how to make the Twain drivers accessible to Nikon Scan or PS 5. Then in message #261, you said,
<quote> When you say you can't get it to accept a twain source what do you mean? Are you trying to use another program to import an image directly from the scanner? If so, I'm not so sure this can be done under Windows 7 as there are no WIA drivers for the scanner under 7 or Vista 64-bit, therefor twain won't work with the scanner.>
Again, there is NO twain support so don't look for it. Sorry.
Perhaps that's why I'm having so much trouble, BUT, how in the world did I get it to work beautifully through PS cs5 before? When I went to "Import", I selected the Twain driver for Nikon Scanner, and it loaded right up. If only I could reconstruct what I had.
It's not going to
Now I understand your not wanting to struggle with this type of thing, but could you refer me to some place that may have the time and expertise? If it weren't for the value of using ICE with Nikon Scan, I might be tempted to use VueScan, but I found the option to be like magic.
In any case, I too want to thank you for all your past support on this topic.

I was so proud of getting this scanner to work for me. Since I seem to have a credibility problem here, I'll elaborate just a bit. When I 1st got the Nikon Scan program to work stand alone (using Steel Chn's method), I was troubled at not being able to use it through Photo Shop cs5. After help from another site, (can't remember where) and much reading, I learned that Adobe had stopped providing the Twain drivers with the program. So I DL'd them from Adobe and put them in the appropriate folder and all was great. I could see both the Nikon and Epson scanners under Twain under "Import" in PS. Because Twain only comes as 32 bit, I was using PS in 32 bit mode also. I know you say it shouldn't work, but I was able to scan maybe 50 or more slides directly into PS.However, I was successful in gaining full control in my Win 7 Ultimate 64 using the instructions from Steel Chn.

but it certainly doesn't come from me. My response to you was for you to clarify your post since it mentions things that has nothing todo with my fix here.Since I seem to have a credibility problem here, I'll elaborate just a bit.
...and doing a restart, the computer would't fire up. My heart sank. It seemed to be starting up in a sort of sleep mode, with nothing on the screen. The heat indicator light thing on the corsair cpu water cooler body comes on, but that's as far as it gets. After turning on and off quite a few times, same thing. Tried pressing lots of keys, and ctrl alt delete etc. and eventually it fired up.
Thanks for your quick reply sygnus21.
Since posting the thread, I have done a system restore to just before installing Nikon Scan, and my computer is back to working fine again. Starts up no worries, so I am thinking that this means it is not a hardware problem. My computer is only a few years old, and has a see through side panel, and everything is very clean in there. I generally dedust my computer and filters regularly.
Can't help but think it is software related, because the problem began immediately after loading the software, and before connecting the scanner. The software installation required a restart, and I did make the mistake of hitting the 'restart now' button in the software, rather than exiting and shutting down, and starting normally. Don't laugh at me, but do you think this may cause problems because the software is written for Vista.( You're laughing at me aren't you ?)
Before doing the restore, I turned off and started again a number of times, and each time it started as though in sleep mode, then after about 15 secs, would fire up. My mouse and keyboard are set to bring it out of sleep mode, but didn't have any effect during this 15 secs. My settings were still on 'never' for sleep and hibernation.
Anyhow, I am still very happy knowing that I can get the scanner to work on this box thanks to you.
If the worst thing that happens is that I wait 15 secs for bootup, that's not so bad.
I will reload the software again, and not press Nikon's restart button just for fun.
Many Thanks for your time,

I have tried this method for Windows 10, but it is not working as it did for Windows 7. Any ideas on how to install a driver for ED4000 on Windows 10?
Thanks

I've already detailed the method that I used to install the scanner driver in Windows 10 (see earlier messages). It works the same as it did in Windows 8 and 8.1. If you provided more details about what you tried or what is not working perhaps someone could help you.
